Woke to Written Off: And Just Like That Star Bobby Lee Opens Up About His Exit

Bobby Lee, 53, has opened up about being written out of And Just Like That due to being 'woke'; Ali Stroker, Sara Ramirez, Ivan Hernandez, Lee and Sarah Jessica Parker seen in a still

Sex and the City Sequel Series: The Woke Wars

The latest season of And Just Like That has been making headlines, but not for its sassy storylines or stylish fashion – it's all about the drama behind the scenes! In a shocking interview, comedian Bobby Lee dished on why he was written out of the HBO Max series, and trust us, it's a juicy tale of wokeness gone wrong.

Bobby Lee, 53, played the lovable Jackie Nee on seasons one and two of the show. But when Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) switched gears from podcast host to novelist, Lee's storyline came to an abrupt end. In a candid chat with Entertainment Weekly at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, Lee spilled the tea: "Some of the woke elements of the show got rid of, and I think I was a part of that." Ouch!

Lee played Jackie Nee on the first two seasons of the show, but his storyline concluded when Carrie Bradshaw (Parker) shifted her career focus

But Lee wasn't alone in his departure from the show. Sara Ramirez's character, Che Diaz – a non-binary Mexican Irish diva who won over Miranda Hobbes' heart (played by Cynthia Nixon) – also got the axe. And let's just say it wasn't because fans were begging for more of Che's... erm... unique charm.

According to Lee, "Sara didn't come back, and some other people. They tried to put minorities in, and – I don't know. I never saw the show." Okay, Bobby, we get it – you're not a fan of the show. But what about your experience working on it? Did you have any behind-the-scenes drama?

Sources close to the production (and talking exclusively with TheScholarlyNote.com) reveal that Lee's storyline wrapped up neatly because Carrie shifted her focus to novel-writing, and "the podcast colleagues came to a natural conclusion." Oh, so that's why Jackie Nee was suddenly MIA? We're not buying it!

Lee revealed he believes he got axed from the show along with other 'woke elements,' in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly

But what really got our attention is the alleged reason behind Sara Ramirez's departure. Insiders claim Che Diaz became a "waste of airtime" after their split with Miranda, and fans found them "annoying." Ouch! Sounds like someone (or some people) didn't get along with Che.

In an Instagram rant last January, Ramirez seemed to hint that the show was dropping them due to their pro-Palestinian views. But sources close to the production quickly shot down this theory: "Sara was not fired because they support Palestine and the cease fire," they told TheScholarlyNote.com exclusively. "Sara was fired because Che brought nothing to the show anymore. They were on the chopping block since last season."

Yikes! Sounds like someone got a little too sensitive about their character's... questionable reception. We're not saying Che wasn't an interesting addition to the series, but it seems like some viewers just didn't connect with them.

He also touched on Sara Ramirez's departure: 'I think Sara didn't come back and some other people. They tried to put minorities in, and ¿ I don't know'; Ramirez seen with Cynthia Nixon

And let's be real – we've all seen those "cringeworthy" moments when a show tries too hard to be woke. In this case, Che's character was accused of setting back non-binary representation by 70 years! Yeah, that's quite a statement.

We're not here to pick sides or defend anyone's wokeness (or lack thereof), but it's clear the show is trying to navigate some tricky waters with its character choices. Love 'em or hate 'em – And Just Like That has always been about pushing boundaries and challenging social norms.

But will we see more of these woke storylines in season three? One thing's for sure: the drama behind the scenes is only getting juicier!

Ramirez, 49, a non-binary star, did not return for season 3, after their character, Che Diaz, was widely criticized as 'annoying' by viewers

What do you think, readers? Were Che Diaz's antics a "waste of airtime" or a bold move for representation? Sound off in the comments!

As we wrap up this scandalous scoop, remember – And Just Like That airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO Max, with plenty more drama to go around. Stay woke (or not), and stay tuned for more updates from TheScholarlyNote.com!

Despite his departure, Lee has fond memories of being on the show, and called his co-star Parker 'the nicest person I've ever met'; Seen with Parker on set in NYC in 2021
