Squid Game Shocker: Creators Spill the Tea on Season Three Split

In a shocking revelation, Squid Game writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk has finally spilled the beans on why season three of the Netflix phenomenon was split into two parts. And let's just say it's a juicy reason that will leave fans reeling!

As you know, Squid Game took the world by storm when it premiered on Netflix in 2021. The dystopian survival thriller became an instant hit, and fans couldn't get enough of the suspenseful storylines and heart-stopping action. But after three long years, we finally got our hands on season two... only to find out that it was cut short at just seven episodes.

Fans were left wondering why Hwang Dong-hyuk decided to split the second season in half, but now we have the answer. Speaking exclusively to TheScholarlyNote.com at the Squid Game season three premiere, Hwang revealed: "I originally didn't plan for it to be split into two seasons. I was thinking that it'd be a single one, but in the process of writing it, it came out to about 13 episodes, which I thought was too long to put out as a single season."

So, why not just merge the extra episodes with season three? Well, Hwang has a clever explanation for that too. "I also thought it was too long when you look at current trends," he said. "And I thought that we wanted to split it, and if we were to split it, at the end of episode seven, when Seong Gi-hun hits rock bottom after his rebellion failed... I thought that was the just the right moment to sort of dividing into two chapters."

But what about season four? Are we in for more Squid Game mayhem? Unfortunately, Hwang has some bad news. "I think that once you watch season three, people will understand why the story should come to a closure here," he said. "So I don't have any plans for a season four." Ouch!

Fans had to wait three years for the next instalment of the show (series two), which landed in December 2024, and luckily they've only had to wait six months for the third

However, there's still hope on the horizon. When we asked if there might be spin-off projects in the works, Hwang's eyes lit up. "I do have some ideas, maybe about a spin off," he teased.

Meanwhile, Lee Jung-jae, who plays protagonist Seong Gi-hun, had some thoughts of his own about the show's impact on popular culture. "I always thought that having somethings that come out of an original story so that many people can enjoy it further... I've always seen it as a good thing," he said.

As for the show's notorious children's games, Lee added: "Whether or not that is successful, I don't think that is important, what I think is important is that there is more for people to enjoy." Amen to that!

MailOnline also caught up with Lee Jung-jae - who plays protagonist Seong Gi-hun in the show - and asked what he thought about the other 'real life' programmes that have been made off the back of the Netflix hit

So, what can we expect from season three? Well, Netflix has just dropped the official trailer, and let's just say it's looking like things are about to get very interesting indeed. With a star-studded cast including Lee Jung-jae, Park Gyu-young, Gong Yoo, Lee Byung-hun, Jo Yu-ri, and Wi Ha-joon, you can bet your life that this season will be just as intense as the last.

And don't even get us started on the reactions from fans. When we asked what people were saying about the new season, a fan replied: "Not having to wait 2-3 years between seasons is so refreshing. The fact that we just waited 7 months for the season 3 instead of 3 years is crazy!"

Another fan chimed in: "Less than a month!? Thank you for not making us wait until 2028 after the trailer drops, looks [fire emoji]."
