Michael Cera Spills the Tea: I Turned Down Harry Potter Franchise Because of Fear of Fame!

In a shocking revelation, Arrested Development star Michael Cera has come clean about his decision to turn down the opportunity to join J.K. Rowling's beloved Harry Potter franchise. The 37-year-old actor made headlines in the early 2000s for his breakout role as George Michael Bluth on the Emmy-winning sitcom.

In a candid chat with The Louis Theroux Podcast, Cera dished about why he declined the chance to be part of the magical world. It wasn't because he disagreed with Rowling's stance on transgender rights, unlike many of the franchise's stars who have distanced themselves from her in recent years.

So, what was the real reason behind his decision? According to Cera, it all came down to fear of fame! "I think I just declined to engage with it because, I think it would be like probably six years commitment or something," he explained. And that's not all - there was another factor at play.

"I did sort of, make a conscientious choice to limit my exposure a little bit, or just try and be a little more in control of it," Cera revealed. "Doing, especially little kids movies. I had a big fear of doing things that would get me too famous."

But has his approach to fame changed over the years? It seems so! When asked if he's still concerned about becoming too famous, Cera admitted, "I think I've outgrown that particular feeling, but I think that's what that was at that time."

The BAFTA nominee explained he turned down the chance  to be associated with the Harry Potter franchise's Fantastic Beasts series because of the fame it might bring

So, what does the future hold for this talented actor? You can currently catch him in Wes Anderson's quirky The Phoenician Scheme alongside A-list stars like Willem Dafoe, Benicio Del Toro, Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, and Benedict Cumberbatch.

"I grew up watching his [Anderson's] movies and worshiping him and all of my friends, all of my peers, we were all like, he's the guy," Cera gushed about the writer-director. "He had a big influence on my general sense of taste and humor and aspirations as a performer. So, I think if I fit in his thing, it's because I've grown up on him."

But before he was making waves in Hollywood, Cera got his start at just 14 years old on the Emmy-winning Arrested Development. His co-star Will Arnett often praised him, saying, "You're really funny." That meant a lot to the young actor, especially coming from someone as hilarious as Arnett.

Cera has been married to his wife Nadine for an undisclosed amount of time, and they've expanded their family with two adorable kids. The oldest was born in the fall of 2021, while the youngest arrived in early 2024. But how did they meet? Cera shared the sweet story on Justin Long's Life Is Short podcast in 2022.

"There was no shyness, we just kept seeing each other and smiling. It was so comfortable," he gushed. "It was a really unfamiliar way to experience a stranger, and I felt like I saw the whole thing."
