Unveiling Carolyn: The Untold Story of JFK Jr.'s Enigmatic Wife
The Tragic Love Story of John F Kennedy Jr and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy: A Tale of Obsession, Fashion, and Heartbreak
It's been 26 years since the world was left reeling by the sudden and tragic death of John F Kennedy Jr and his wife Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. The young couple, who were America's golden couple, met an untimely end in a plane crash off the coast of Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts. But despite the passage of time, their love story continues to captivate us.
John F Kennedy Jr, also known as John John, was the son of President John F Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. He was a pilot and journalist who had inherited his family's fame and fortune. Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, on the other hand, was a publicist and producer who worked for Calvin Klein. She was known for her striking features, wild hair, and bohemian style.
Their love story began when John Jr met Carolyn at a dinner party in 1993. The two quickly became inseparable, with John Jr proposing to Carolyn just nine months into their relationship. They got married in 1996, surrounded by friends and family.
But their love story was not without its challenges. Carolyn was known for her wild hair and bohemian style, which didn't quite fit the image of a Kennedy. She was also accused of being "icy" and "vapid" by the media, which only added to the pressure she felt. John Jr, on the other hand, was expected to live up to his family's legacy and reputation.
Their marriage was marked by ups and downs, with John Jr reportedly feeling insecure about his own identity and struggling to reconcile his love for Carolyn with his family's expectations. The couple had a violent bust-up in Battery Park, which only added to the public's perception of them as a troubled couple.
Despite their challenges, the couple remained devoted to each other until their tragic death. John Jr was flying his private plane when he became disoriented in thick fog and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean, killing himself, Carolyn, and her older sister Lauren.
In recent years, their love story has been revisited through writer and director Ryan Murphy's upcoming FX series "American Love Story." The show is expected to explore the couple's romance, as well as the public's fascination with them.
But what drives our continued obsession with Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy? According to author Elizabeth Beller, who wrote a biography about Carolyn called "Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy," it may be because we are trying to compensate for how poorly we treated her in life.
In the book, Beller suggests that Carolyn was unfairly maligned by the media and the public, with many criticizing her for being too thin, too fashion-conscious, or too "icy." But beneath the surface, Carolyn was a complex and multifaceted person who was passionate about causes that mattered to her, such as working with children and young people.
As one of Carolyn's close friends told Beller, "Carolyn was very bohemian, a downtown girl, which John loved... but it’s possible John was worried how that would go over with Jackie." (Jackie Kennedy Onassis, the mother-in-law.)
The friend also revealed that Carolyn had broken up with John Jr several times because he refused to introduce her to his mother. It seems that Carolyn was desperate for Jackie's approval and validation.
Despite the challenges she faced, Carolyn remained devoted to her husband and their marriage until the end. As one of Carolyn's co-workers at Calvin Klein told Beller, "Carolyn was a true New Yorker – tough, resilient, and unapologetic."
