"We had no prior knowledge of Zubeen taking a yacht visit with the local Assamese community," Mahanta revealed in a statement. "In light of this tragedy, we have decided to cancel the event as a mark of respect."

The Times of India reported that Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed a press conference on Sunday, where he revealed that Garg's death certificate lists drowning as the cause of death. However, the post-mortem report is still pending and will be released once completed.

The Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, took to social media to express his shock and condolences over Garg's untimely death. "I'm shocked by the sudden demise of popular singer Zubeen Garg," Modi tweeted on X. "He will be remembered for his rich contribution to music. His renditions were very popular among people across all walks of life."

Mahanta noted in the statement: 'We later learned that a few members of the local Assamese community had taken him on a yacht visit, of which we had no prior knowledge...In light of this tragedy, we are cancelling the event'

Rahul Gandhi, the Chief Minister of Assam, also paid tribute to Garg, calling it a "terrible tragedy". "His voice defined a generation, and his talent was truly unmatched," Gandhi tweeted. "He overcame personal tragedies to reshape the landscape of Assamese music. His perseverance and courage have left an enduring mark."

Garg's illustrious career spanned four decades, during which he released over 38K songs in various languages and played 12 instruments, including the drums, guitar, harmonica, mandolin, keyboard, and tabla. He was also a sought-after singer, with his signature song "Ya Ali" from Anurag Basu's 2006 romantic thriller, Gangster: A Love Story, being one of his biggest hits.
