The Untold Struggles of Hollywood Legend Robert Redford

Robert Redford (seen in 1981) has died aged 89, the New York Times reported

ROBERT REDFORD: THE HOLLYWOOD LEGEND BEHIND THE MASK

Behind every Hollywood icon lies a complex web of triumphs and tragedies, and Robert Redford is no exception. The Oscar-winning actor, who passed away at 89, left an indelible mark on the film industry, but his personal life was marked by hardship, loss, and heartache.

A LIFE OF HARD KNOCKS

The Oscar-winning actor, known for films Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All the President's Men, died in his sleep at his home in Utah on Tuesday morning. Seen in 2019

Redford's early years were marred by polio, a disease that can cause paralysis, brain inflammation, and even death. The actor contracted the virus after swimming in the ocean at just 6 years old. "It wasn't an iron lung case," he recalled to NPR's Fresh Air in 2018. "But it was severe enough to put me in bed for two weeks."

Redford's parents were not immune to hardship either. His mother, Martha Hart, died of a blood disorder at just 40 years old when Redford was 18. The actor has spoken fondly of his mother, who encouraged him to pursue acting despite being from a humble background.

"I took it all for granted as a teenager," Redford told Esquire in 2017. "But when I grew up and realized what had happened, I realized, 'Oh my God, she really did encourage me to go out there and take chances.'"

FROM STREET GANG TO HOLLYWOOD

Redford's life was not always the epitome of glamour. He joined a street gang in high school called the Barons and even got arrested for "borrowing an automobile that had stolen jewelry in its trunk." The actor has spoken about how he was persuaded by his peers to jump off a rooftop, which nearly resulted in his death.

"I toughened up fast," Redford said. "Facing down fears hit home early... You have two choices, it seemed to me. You can be led by your fears, or you can overcome them."

Redford's rebellious streak continued into adulthood when he attended the University of Colorado on a baseball scholarship but lost his funding due to partying and poor grades.

MARRIAGE, CHILDREN, AND TRAGEDY

In 1958, Redford married Lola Van Wagenen, and they welcomed their first son, Scott, just months later. However, tragedy struck when the baby died at just 10 weeks old from shaken infant syndrome (SIDS). The couple was devastated.

"That was a tough hit," Redford told People in 1998. "It was our first child. We were in New York and we were broke. It was really tough."

Redford and his wife went on to have three more children: daughters Shauna and Amy, and son Jamie. However, their family continued to suffer from tragedy. In 2009, Redford's daughter Shauna survived a gruesome car accident that left her vehicle submerged in water with her inside.

Jamie, the couple's youngest child, suffered from a respiratory disease as an infant and later developed colitis, which led to liver issues and cirrhosis. He underwent two liver transplants but ultimately lost his battle with cancer at 58 in 2020.

Speaking to People in 1998, Redford reflected on the emotional toll of watching his children suffer through multiple tragic events and health issues.

"People think it's been easy for me," he said. "That's hard to live with. It's so untrue... The hardest thing in the world is when your children have problems. There have been so many hits on our family that no one knows about, and I don't want them to, for my family's sake."

THE LATER YEARS

Redford's personal life took a more positive turn with his marriage to Sibylle Szaggars in 2009. At the time of his death, he had seven grandchildren.

Despite his numerous awards and accolades, Redford remained humble and dedicated to his craft until the very end. In his final years, he continued to direct films and was an advocate for social justice causes.

In a statement released by The Scholarly Note, Redford's family said: "We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Robert. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched."

The actor may have left this world behind, but his impact on Hollywood and beyond will never fade. As we remember Redford's remarkable life and career, we are reminded that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope for redemption and a second chance.

THE FINAL WORD

As Redford himself once said: "You can't be too careful when you're living with your heart open." His story serves as a poignant reminder that life is full of twists and turns, but it's how we respond to them that truly matters.
