Hollywood Vampires is the sensational new book that chronicles Johnny Depp and Amber Heard ’s toxic union

Hollywood's Wildest Ride: The Turbulent Tale of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard

It's a tale that has captivated the world, a saga of love, lies, and legal battles that has left even the most seasoned Hollywood insiders stunned. For years, we've watched as Johnny Depp, the beloved star of Pirates of the Caribbean, and Amber Heard, the stunning actress from Aquaman, have played out their very public drama on the world stage.

But just when you thought it was all over, a new twist emerged: Johnny Depp's explosive defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard. The trial, which drew international attention and packed the courtroom with fans and foes alike, has left many wondering: who's telling the truth? And what secrets are they hiding?

Today, in the final part of our gripping series, we chart the bitter unravelling of their marriage – and how Amber’s transformation into a #MeToo icon would set the stage for one of the most explosive celebrity trials of the decade

It all began in 2015 when Johnny Depp and Amber Heard announced their whirlwind romance. Just a year later, they were married, with Amber claiming she was "overwhelmed" by her new husband's jealousy and aggression. But was it really just a case of "poisonous masculinity," as Amber would later claim? Or was there more to the story?

Fast forward to 2016 when Amber Heard accused Johnny Depp of domestic violence, alleging he had repeatedly attacked her while under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The public outcry was swift and merciless, with many calling for #JusticeForAmberHeard. But was it all just a publicity stunt? Or did something more sinister unfold behind closed doors?

In 2020, Johnny Depp fired back with his own defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard, claiming she had made false and defamatory statements about him during their divorce proceedings. The trial, which began in 2022, drew attention from around the world as both sides presented their cases.

On Monday May 23, 2016, three days after Johnny Depp’s mother died, Amber Heard quietly filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. After just 15 months, their turbulent marriage was at an end

But what really got everyone talking was the avalanche of explosive evidence that surfaced throughout the trial. From a recording of Amber Heard admitting to "hitting" Johnny Depp and pelting him with pots, pans, and vases, to allegations that she had once defecated in their bed (which she claimed was actually done by their dogs), it was a wild ride indeed.

And then there were the alpacas. Yes, you read that right: a pair of stinky alpacas wearing rainbow pom-pom necklaces became an unexpected sensation outside the courtroom, with fans and foes alike flocking to see what all the fuss was about.

In the end, it was up to the jury to decide who was telling the truth. And in a shocking twist, they found Johnny Depp's claims of defamation to be true, awarding him $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. Amber Heard, meanwhile, was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages from Johnny Depp, but no punitive damages.

As the dust settles on this very public drama, we can't help but wonder: what really went down behind those closed doors? And will these two Hollywood A-listers ever find peace and closure?

The following week, on June 7, 2016, TMZ published another shocking story – this time about Amber and the girlfriend she had been seeing when she first met Johnny, Tasya van Ree

In private, Amber had been vocal about the fact that she believed her career and reputation had suffered because she went public as the abuse victim of an ultra-famous and beloved star

In January 2019, Amber graced the cover of Glamour’s final print issue, wearing a low-cut, baby-blue satin suit and leaning against a shiny red convertible. The headline: ‘Amber Heard: Silence Is Complacency’

The lawsuit was also a plot twist in the wider #MeToo movement: Johnny was turning the tables on his accuser

This time Johnny won his case. The jury found unanimously that he had proved defamation and that Amber had defamed him with ‘actual malice’

Celebrity trials have always captured the public’s imagination, playing out like soap operas in the media – and this one was no different, being fully televised
