In Charli's 2024 album BRAT, she sings about anxiety and feeling insecure in the track "Sympathy Is a Knife", which some fans believe is a veiled reference to Taylor Swift. The lyrics seem to imply that Charli is worried about another woman, possibly Taylor, singing: "I couldn't even be her if I tried". And let's not forget the line "Don't wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend's show / Fingers crossed behind my back / I hope they break up quick" - which some fans think might be a nod to Taylor's romance with Matty.
This feud has been brewing for years, but it all started in 2019 when Charli XCX made comments about opening for Taylor Swift on her Reputation stadium tour. In an interview with The Scholarly Note, she said: "As an artist, it kind of felt like I was getting up onstage and waving to 5-year-olds". Ouch! It seems like Taylor might have been sending a message to Charli, but some fans think it's actually an ode to "rave kandi" - which is similar to friendship bracelets and often exchanged at raves. Charli's music talks about the rave scene, and some fans believe this is just a clever subtweet.
And if that wasn't enough, there have been reports of Charli XCX's Brazilian fans chanting "Taylor é morta" (which translates to "Taylor is dead") at her concerts. The fan who shared the video on Twitter addressed Charli, saying: "Hey @charli_xcx, your Brazilian fans have been showing toxic behaviour by screaming 'Taylor is dead!' in your concerts and events related to you... Could you do something about it? We don't [believe] that's what music should be about".
Charli responded on her Instagram, writing: "can the people who do this please stop. online or at my shows. It is the opposite of what I want and it disturbs me that anyone would think there is room for this in this community. I will not tolerate it". Ouch! It seems like these two pop stars are engaged in a full-blown feud.
