Steven Spielberg's Daughter Faces Criticism on Directorial Debut

Steven Spielberg's youngest daughter Destry has made her directorial debut with Please Don't Feed The Children, but the film is currently receiving bad reviews

Destry Spielberg's Film Debut Flops: The Rise and Fall of a Hollywood Darling

In a shocking turn of events, Steven Spielberg's youngest daughter Destry has made her directorial debut with the horror film "Please Don't Feed The Children," but it seems like nepotism might be the real killer. The movie, streaming exclusively on Tubi, has been eviscerated by critics since its release last week.

According to IGN, the film is a mess of epic proportions, with Destry's direction being singled out as one of the main culprits. "What starts as a novel – if dubious – spin on the end of the world quickly becomes a bland, overcooked nothing burger, no thanks to Paul Bertino's one-dimensional screenplay and Spielberg's unsteady direction," wrote IGN's Lena Wilson.

The Tubi film follows a gang of orphans who travel to the south in search of a new life after a viral outbreak decimates the adult population of the nation

The publication also took issue with Destry's inability to let her actors shine, saying that "Spielberg's timid direction also contributes to the movie's muddiness and hobbles its capable performers... She seems to have forgotten that old moviemaking axiom: Show, don't tell."

But it's not just IGN that's panning the film. Paste magazine was equally scathing in their review, saying that "This Tubi original, sci-fi-horror-tinged thriller ultimately comes off as a conflicted, scattershot mess, let down less by anything related to Spielberg's direction and more by a perplexing screenplay, amateurish technical issues, and occasional weakness in its performances, with the exception of headliner Michelle Dockery."

The movie has a paltry five out of 10 on IMDb, thanks to a string of poor user reviews. But not everyone is dumping on Destry's debut. Fangoria was one of the few publications that gave the film a positive review, praising Destry's direction and technique.

Destry previously denied accusations of nepotism in a series of posts on social media back in 2021

"Destry Allyn Spielberg demonstrates with this that she has a dexterous understanding of technique, genre convention and emotional nuance," they gushed.

So what went wrong? According to sources close to the production, Destry was determined to bring in fresh faces for her film. "My goal was to bring in as many new faces as possible – that's kind of my goal as a director in the future," she told The Scholarly Note in an exclusive interview.

She worked with renowned casting director Anne McCarthy to find young and talented actors who were eager to break into Hollywood. But it seems like Destry might have bitten off more than she could chew.

The 28-year-old has also worked as a model and actress

"I want to start careers – I'm sick of seeing movies that lack young talent," she said. "There are so many young and talented actors that are not getting seen."

But some industry insiders are questioning whether Destry's dedication to discovering new talent is just a cover for her own lack of experience. After all, the film has been widely panned by critics.

Destry previously denied accusations of nepotism in a series of posts on social media back in 2021. "I am just a young aspiring female filmmaker who admires the art of cinema," she wrote. "People can argue nepotism, but I know deep down that I worked hard to get where I am and it wasn't easy."

But it seems like the tide is turning against Destry's film. Will her father Steven Spielberg step in to save the day? Only time will tell.

As for Destry, she's currently signed to DT Model Management, after previously pursuing a career in equestrianism and modeling. But with this film flop, will she be able to bounce back?

Only one thing is certain: nepotism or not, Destry Spielberg's debut has been a disaster. And it's time for her to face the music.
