Snoop Dogg Addresses Backlash: Reflecting on LGBTQ+ Representation in 'Lightyear'
SNOOP DOGG'S LATEST SCANDAL: THE RAPPER'S SHOCKING COMMENTS ON LGBTQ+ REPRESENTATION IN LIGHTYEAR SPARK OUTRAGE AND DEFENDANCE
In a stunning display of ignorance and insensitivity, Snoop Dogg has sparked outrage after criticizing the LGBTQ+ representation in Disney and Pixar's 2022 animated film Lightyear. The 53-year-old rapper, known for his smooth flow and charismatic personality, has been accused of being homophobic by fans and critics alike.
According to reports, Snoop was seen leaving a movie theater, visibly shaken and disoriented after watching the film with his grandson. When questioned about the scene featuring two lesbian space rangers, Alisha Hawthorne (voiced by Uzo Aduba) and her wife Kiko, Snoop appeared flummoxed.
"I didn't come in for this sh**, man," he admitted on an episode of the It's Giving podcast earlier this month. "I just came to watch the goddamn movie. These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They're going to ask questions. I don't have the answer."
Snoop's candid comments sparked a firestorm of criticism online, with many accusing him of being out of touch and intolerant. One fan wrote on social media, "Being afraid of gay parents in movies is crazy. Snoop, you need to educate yourself on acceptance and love." Another commenter chimed in, "It isn't that hard to explain. Science. The answer is Science, Snoop. In vitro is used by many."
But it seems Snoop has been trying to navigate these complex issues for some time now. Back in 2014, he faced backlash after using a slur in an Instagram caption. And let's not forget his infamous 2015 remark about Caitlyn Jenner being a "science project." Ouch!
However, in the face of mounting criticism, Snoop has taken to social media to clarify his stance and show support for the LGBTQ+ community. In a message posted on Hollywood Unlocked, he wrote:
"All my gay friends [know] what's up, they been calling me with love... My bad for not knowing the answers for a 6-year-old. Teach me how to learn. I'm not perfect."
He also took to Instagram to express his regret and ask for guidance from his LGBTQ+ friends: "Teach me how to learn, fam. I'm trying to be better, but it's hard when you don't know what to say."
But some have questioned Snoop's sincerity, pointing out that he has a history of making questionable comments about the LGBTQ+ community. Screenwriter Lauren Gunderson, who worked on early versions of the Lightyear script and created the lesbian couple featured in the film, even weighed in on social media.
"So. I created the LIGHTYEAR lesbians," she revealed on Instagram. "Writing Alisha with a wife felt natural and impactful... I knew the representational effect it could have. I was elated that they kept it..."
Gunderson's comments were met with love and support from fans, who praised her for creating authentic and meaningful representation in the film.
"Suffice to say, Snoop Dogg has some learning to do," one fan wrote on Twitter. "But hey, at least he's trying?"
As the controversy surrounding Snoop's comments continues to unfold, one thing is clear: the rapper still has a lot to learn about acceptance and love. But with his grandkids by his side, maybe he'll finally get it right.
In the meantime, fans are calling for more representation and inclusivity in media – and we couldn't agree more!
