Shadow King or Royal Duty: How Prince William's Future Was Contested

Prince William with his father the then Prince Charles in 2009. Shocking documents uncovered by the Mail On Sunday in 2009 suggested that Charles might never become King and instead William - at just 27-years-old - was allegedly being prepared to become a 'shadow king'

Royal Scandal Rocks Palace: Prince William's Secret Life as a "Shadow King" Exposed

In a stunning revelation, shocking documents uncovered by The Scholarly Note have sent shockwaves through the royal family, suggesting that Prince William was being groomed to become a "shadow king" in 2009. According to bombshell reports, this would have meant that William, then just 27 years old, would have taken on more engagements on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II, effectively sidelining Prince Charles and putting William's own royal duties ahead of his father's.

But here's the juiciest part: it seems that William himself was horrified by the prospect of becoming king before his time. In fact, he was reportedly "worried" about being "hurried into a life of royal duty" and couldn't think of anything worse than giving up his dream of pursuing a career as a search and rescue pilot.

The Making of a Royal Romance

Royal author Katie Nicholl wrote in her book The Making of a Royal Romance that the Mail on Sunday uncovered proof that a "handover of power was beginning." Nicholl notes that there's no smoke without fire, and for all the denials from the royals, the fact that William and Harry would be taking on more responsibilities is undeniable.

A "Shadow King" in Waiting

The one person most against William becoming the heir apparent was actually the young prince himself

As the news spread like wildfire, Palace officials were quick to deny any suggestion that William would become king before Charles. But Nicholl's sources suggest otherwise: there were whispers of a "handover of power" and rumors of a "shadow king" taking shape behind the scenes.

William's Royal Ambitions

It seems that William was more interested in pursuing his career as a search and rescue pilot than in following in his father's royal footsteps. According to Nicholl, William had made it clear he didn't want to be "hurried into a life of royal duty" and would rather stick to his day job.

The Queen with William stood behind her. Unsurprisingly the Palace were reportedly 'horrified' by the claims and they issued a swift rebuke of any suggestion that William would become King before Charles

From Pilots to Palace Duty

Fast-forward to 2017 when William became a full-time working royal. But did you know that before then, William had already served in the army? He joined Sandhurst as an Officer Cadet in 2006 and was briefly considered for frontline duty. However, due to concerns about his safety and the risk of deployment, he was instead sent to the RAF.

William's Navy Adventure

Royal insider Katie Nicholl (pictured) said William was 'worried' about the plan and had in the past made it clear he did not want to be 'hurried into a life of royal duty' and 'could not think of anything worse'

In a thrilling turn of events, William joined the Royal Navy in 2008, where he served on board HMS Iron Duke. During his time at sea, he intercepted a vessel attempting to smuggle 900kg of cocaine worth £40 million (adjusted for inflation, that's over £60 million today!).

Royal Risk-Taker

William was part of the crew that spotted an ocean-going speedboat suspected of smuggling drugs and ordered it to stop. When US coastguard officers boarded the boat, they found a stash of cocaine and detained the smugglers.

A Royal Legacy

William's stint in the Navy had a lasting impact on him. In 2020, during a Remembrance Day video chat with LPT Damon Bell, who was serving on HMS Montrose at the time, William joked about his own drug bust experience, saying "I wasn't going to bring that up, Damon, but I am glad it's still being talked about."
