Sandra Bullock and Jennifer Aniston's Starry Rivalry: From Competition to Companionship

Jennifer Aniston and Sandra Bullock probably should've been friends during the height of their nineties hey-day, but they were urged to remain competitive for A-list roles (pictured in 2020)

The Secret Feud that Almost Was: Sandra Bullock and Jennifer Aniston Spill the Tea

In a shocking revelation, two Hollywood heavy-hitters have finally broken their silence on the intense competition that once fueled their careers. Yes, we're talking about the infamous rivalry between Sandra Bullock and Jennifer Aniston! In an exclusive interview with Vanity Fair, the 61-year-old Miss Congeniality alum spilled the beans on why she and her former rival never became BFFs during their heyday in the nineties.

According to Bullock, the pressure from industry insiders to stay competitive was suffocating. "We were told we weren't supposed to do that – meaning like and respect and honor each other," she revealed, hinting at a culture of cutthroat ambition that fueled their initial animosity towards one another. But what really got in the way of their potential friendship? A romantic entanglement with the same man, Tate Donovan!

The 61-year-old Miss Congeniality alum explained to Vanity Fair on Monday: 'We were from that time in the business where no one wanted the ladies to be friends ¿ it was about pitting everyone against each other. We were told we weren't supposed to do that ¿ meaning like and respect and honor each other'

In a juicy twist, Bullock confessed that she dated the 61-year-old Damages alum from 1990-1995, while Aniston followed suit with Donovan between 1995-1998. Their complicated love triangle was further complicated by their shared on-screen chemistry – remember the rom-com Love Potion No. 9? It wasn't until years later, at a wedding where they both knew the groom, that Bullock and Aniston finally met and bonded over their shared sense of humor.

"We were just like, 'Oh my God, we need to meet and cut loose!' And we did," Bullock recalled with a chuckle. But it wasn't until they started exchanging messages – or rather, "trading shots and notes" – that they truly connected. Their friendship has since blossomed into a beautiful bond of mutual respect and admiration.

"We were just like two peas in a pod," Aniston gushed about their shared love of interior design, practical jokes, lavish trips, and numerology readings. But it's not all fun and games; the Emmy winner affectionately calls Bullock "Sand-a-La" and has nothing but praise for her friend's kind heart. "She could very easily be hard, but she's incredibly open," Aniston revealed.

Another reason Sandra and the 56-year-old Friends alum might have kept their distance was they both dated the same man, Tate Donovan (pictured in 1994)

Their friendship has also been a source of comfort during trying times – like when they commiserate over their shared fear of flying! "The two of us on a plane — it's the most pathetic thing to look at," Bullock laughed. But in a sweet display of solidarity, Aniston once summoned the strength to comfort her friend during a particularly turbulent flight.

"I was not in a great place, and she just held onto my hand and goes, 'This is just a bump,'" Bullock recalled, visibly moved by the memory. "I was like, 'Who the f* are you right now?!'"

But their friendship has also been put to the test when it comes to dealing with stalker situations – both women have faced terrifying home invasions in the past. In 2018, Joshua Corbett died during a standoff with the LAPD after being sentenced to five years probation for stalking Bullock and breaking into her house while she was home.

Bullock dated the 61-year-old Damages alum from 1990-1995 and memorably played awkward scientists who fell for each other in Dale Launer's 1992 rom-com Love Potion No. 9

"It makes me think, 'Do I really have to go outside and navigate the world?'" Bullock said, highlighting the ongoing fear that stalkers instill in their victims. "It's not a one-off; it's ongoing," she emphasized.

On a lighter note, Aniston has been keeping busy with her hit newsroom drama The Morning Show on Apple TV+, where she earns a whopping $2M per episode as executive producer and co-star Alex Levy – a character loosely based on the trailblazing broadcast journalist Diane Sawyer. And in a stunning coup, Bullock will be reprising her role as witch Sally Owens in Susanne Bier's sequel Practical Magic 2 alongside Nicole Kidman, Dianne Wiest, and Stockard Channing.

But it seems their careers aren't the only thing they're rekindling – we can expect to see more of these two talented women together on and off screen! As Aniston put it with a laugh, "There's a motivation of going, 'Okay, we need to go somewhere. Where are we going?' I'm desperately trying not to Howard Hughes myself."

Tate quickly moved on with Jennifer and they dated between 1995-1998 until his five-episode guest gig aired on Friends, in which he played her character Rachel Green's newly-divorced leading man
