Burrows, who is married to American screenwriter Alison Balian, revealed that her eldest child, 12 years old, has recently come out as non-binary. "I'm in a state of learning all the time about how they want to be addressed, what their philosophies are on the world - which are already very developed, aged just twelve," Burrows gushed. "As a parent, I've always wanted to give my children the freedom to explore and express themselves without judgment."

Burrows' own journey of self-discovery began at a young age. Growing up in North London in a proudly left-wing household, she was encouraged by her mother, former primary school teacher and equal rights activist Susie Burrows, to love anyone she wanted from an early age.

"My mum gave me that sense of self... And I've lived by that," Burrows reflected. "I remember thinking I had the right to love who I wanted to love. My mum gave me that sense of freedom."

As a result, Burrows has always been drawn to strong individuals - regardless of gender - and has never felt limited by societal norms. She came out as bisexual in 1999 and has since dated a string of high-profile celebrities, including Alan Cumming, Mike Figgis, and Fiona Shaw.

However, it's her experience as a mother that has given Burrows the greatest sense of fulfillment. She married Balian in 2013 and had two children - a son in 2012 and a daughter in 2017. Although the couple separated five years ago, they remain committed to co-parenting their children.

"I think being a parent is the most important thing I've ever done," Burrows confessed. "I'm proud of my children for who they are, and I want them to grow up feeling loved and supported."
