Sabrina Carpenter Channels Cher with Iconic Bob Mackie Gown at VMAs
SABRINA CARPENTER Channels HER INNER CHER: The 26-Year-Old Singer Sizzles in a Vintage Bob Mackie Gown at the MTV VMAs After-Party
In a dazzling display of style and reverence, Sabrina Carpenter paid homage to music legend Cher by wearing a custom-made vintage Bob Mackie gown to the MTV Video Music Awards after-party on Sunday. The Espresso hitmaker, 26, rocked the iconic look with confidence and panache, showcasing her signature blend of retro flair and modern sophistication.
The gown in question is none other than the same dress Cher famously wore 50 years ago during her duet performance of "Shame, Shame, Shame" with Tina Turner on The Cher Show back in April 1975. Designed by Bob Mackie, one of Hollywood's most renowned costume designers, the dress has been lovingly preserved and custom-made for Sabrina to wear. Its skintight black bodysuit and dazzling pink and blue fringe decked out with mirror rhinestones are a testament to the designer's mastery of glamour.
But what makes this look even more remarkable is that it was the perfect fit for Sabrina's Studio54-inspired VMAs after-party theme, which transported attendees back in time to the heyday of disco. The Pennsylvania native further leaned into the 1970s aesthetic by styling her signature blonde hair in voluminous disco-era curls and rocking bold lower lashes and a vibrant pink lip.
Cher's Reaction: "She Made Me Cool Again!"
When asked about Sabrina's tribute, Cher herself had the most gracious response: "I forget I'm famous sometimes because I'm a mom, I'm kind of old, blah blah blah. But I thought it was kind of cool. She made me cool." We can only imagine how thrilled Cher must have been to see her iconic dress being worn by Sabrina with such flair.
This isn't the first time Sabrina has paid tribute to music icons; she famously channeled Britney Spears during her performance at this year's MTV VMAs, stripping down to a bedazzled bra and dancing in the "rain" inside UBS Arena in Elmont, New York. The look was reminiscent of one of the acts on Spears' Dream Within a Dream Tour back in 2001.
Sabrina's Love Affair with Music Icons
It seems Sabrina has a knack for paying tribute to her musical idols, and this year's VMAs were no exception. At last year's ceremony, she gave nod to Spears by playing her iconic voiceover from "Oops!… I Did It Again" just moments before taking the stage to perform a medley of songs from her sixth studio album, Short n' Sweet.
And if that wasn't enough, Sabrina also showcased her love for Madonna by wearing the dazzling Bob Mackie gown that the 67-year-old once wore to the Oscars in 1991. The look was so eerily similar that many fans marveled at how much Sabrina and Madonna "look alike." Even the Queen of Pop herself couldn't resist commenting on the resemblance, responding to Sabrina's Instagram post with eye emojis: "Is this a Valentine's present to me?"
Sabrina Takes Home Three Moon Person Trophies
As if paying tribute to music icons wasn't enough, Sabrina took home three coveted Moon Person trophies at this year's MTV VMAs. She first won in the Best Album category for Short N Sweet, which was released last August.
In her acceptance speech, Sabrina thanked her fans and expressed gratitude for their support: "Hello. Oh, my goodness. There's so many people here. Well, thank you. Thank you, VMAs, for this. This is, this is my second moon man, which is so crazy... I really don't take for granted when you guys take the time out of your lives to listen to album."
And if that wasn't enough, Sabrina later went on to win Best Pop Artist and Best Visual Effects for her Manchild music video. We can only imagine how thrilled she must have been to take home not one, but three awards.
With her fearless approach to style and music, Sabrina Carpenter is undoubtedly one of the most exciting young talents in the industry today. And it seems we can look forward to many more iconic performances and tributes from this talented singer-songwriter.
