Royal Wardrobe Sharing: Young Royals Steal Stylish Looks from Their Glamorous Mothers!

On July 28, Isabella stepped out in a pair of her mum's Chanel Lambskin Ballerinas in beige and black when they arrived in arrived in Gråsten for their summer holiday

ROYAL HAND-ME-DOWNS: THE TREND TAKING OVER EUROPEAN ROYALS

It's a fashion phenomenon that's got everyone talking! The European royal families are getting creative with their wardrobes, and we're not just talking about swapping out last season's shoes for the latest trends. No, no! We're talking about passing down designer garments from mother to daughter (or even grandmothers to granddaughters) like a treasured family heirloom.

Take Queen Maxima of The Netherlands, for instance. Her closet is overflowing with luxury labels like Chanel, Oscar de la Renta, and Nina Ricci – it's a fashionista's dream come true! And what's the daughter doing? Borrowing from mom's closet, of course! Princess Alexia of the Netherlands rocked an elegant navy midi dress by Oscar de la Renta that her mother wore to the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in 2019. Talk about a family affair!

On August 1, the 18-year-old wore a colourful skirt belonging to her mother Queen Mary to watch a changing of the guard ceremony wearing a La DoubleJ Botanical-Print Midi Skirt

But Princess Alexia is not alone in this trend. Her sister, Princess Catharina-Amalia, may be next in line for the throne, but she's still raiding mom's closet for style inspiration. And we can't blame her – Queen Máxima's got taste! The Dutch royal matriarch has been spotted wearing everything from designer gowns to statement accessories that have become instant hits among the European royal set.

And then there's Princess Charlotte of Wales, who's just beginning to dip her toes into her mother's wardrobe. We spotted her wearing a chic scarf belonging to Kate Middleton during a sweet family photo shoot on Father's Day. The little princess may be only 10 years old, but she's already showing a keen eye for style.

But what about the other European royals? Are they joining in on the fashion fun? Absolutely! Princess Leonor of Spain has been seen sporting a stunning Desigual x Stella Jean Ruffle midi dress that her mother, Queen Letizia, wore to an event back in 2023. And let's not forget Princess Isabella of Denmark, who's been rocking her mom's Chanel Lambskin Ballerinas like they're going out of style.

Mary wore the same skirt in some summery snaps posted to Instagram from a family holiday in Gråsten back in 2020 - when Isabella was just 13 years old

In fact, it seems the entire European royal family is getting in on the action! From Queen Maxima and Princess Alexia to Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway (who's a big fan of vintage designer gowns), it's all about borrowing from mom's closet like never before. And why not? After all, as the old saying goes: "You can't go wrong with a classic – especially when it comes to style!"

But what sparked this trend? Is it an eco-conscious movement to reduce waste and extend the life of designer garments? Or is it simply a case of mothers passing down their favorite pieces to their daughters like treasured family heirlooms? Whatever the reason, one thing's for sure: royal hand-me-downs are here to stay!

Take Princess Estelle of Sweden, who wore her mother Crown Princess Victoria's green gown to a jubilee performance at Drottningholm Palace Theatre in 2023. The little princess looked absolutely adorable in the H&M Conscious Collection gown that her mom had previously worn to the Swedish Chamber of Commerce gala dinner in Amsterdam.

The 53-year-old has even dipped into her daughter's wardrobe once wearing one of the princess's purple double-breasted coat by Dolce & Gabbana

And don't even get us started on Queen Mathilde of Belgium, who's been spotted wearing a stunning green Diane von Furstenberg dress with sparkling emerald earrings borrowed from her daughter Princess Eleanore. The young princess was practically glowing as she took in the official military parade during Belgium's National Day celebrations.

But it's not just the younger royals who are getting in on the action. Take Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, for instance, who's been raiding her own mother Queen Silvia's wardrobe like a pro! In 2018, she wore a vintage Nina Ricci piece to the Nobel Prize banquet at City Hall in Stockholm – a dress that Queen Silvia first wore in 1995.

And let's not forget Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, who's been passing down her stunning designer gowns to her daughter Princess Ingrid Alexandra like they're going out of style. The little princess has worn everything from her mom's Lanvin Spring 2004 Black Silk Dress to her Alberta Ferretti gown.

Spain's princess Leonor looked radiant in the Desigual x Stella Jean Ruffle midi dress at a traditional reception at Marivent Palace on the Balearic Islands on August 5

So what does this trend say about the European royal families? Are they trying to reduce their carbon footprint or simply create a sense of family tradition? Whatever the reason, one thing's for sure: royal hand-me-downs are here to stay – and we can't get enough of them!

As the Duchess of Edinburgh once said, "A good dress is like a good friend – it never goes out of style!" And these European royals are taking that phrase to heart. So go ahead, raid your mother's closet (or grandmother's, for that matter!) and join the ranks of the royal fashionistas who are making this trend their own.
