Royal Drama: Harry and Meghan Stay Hidden as Trump Dines with Royals

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex - seen attending the Time100 Summit in April - are no strangers to upstaging the Royals during big events, but are unusually quiet this week

Meghan and Harry MIA: Did Trump's Wrath Keep Them Hiding?

The royal drama continues, folks! While Prince William and Kate Middleton were living it up at the State Banquet for President Donald Trump, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were noticeably absent from the festivities in Windsor Castle. And we're not just talking about a quick exit; no, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been keeping an unusually low profile in their California mansion in Montecito.

For weeks, they've been laying low after making headlines with Harry's high-profile visit to London and Meghan's Netflix show, Season Two, launch. But what's behind their sudden disappearance from the spotlight? Is it a deliberate attempt to avoid Trump's wrath, or did they get snubbed by the President?

While Harry was slumming it in Montecito, big brother William and his wife Kate Middleton were front and center at the state banquet in Windsor Castle

According to royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams, the couple is being cautious because of their past disagreements with Trump. "I'd be surprised if the Sussexes do anything this week that might annoy," he told The Scholarly Note.com. "The British put on such a ceremonial show. It's intentionally amazing and designed to impress President Trump."

Fitzwilliams believes Meghan and Harry are avoiding any potential drama, considering their history with the President. Remember 2016 when Meghan called Trump "misogynistic" and "divisive"? Or how about 2019 when he described her as "nasty" in an interview? The tension between them is palpable!

And it's not just a one-time thing; there have been several instances where the couple has crossed paths with Trump, resulting in some pretty snarky comments from the President. In fact, after Harry and Meghan spoke out during the 2020 election, hinting at support for President Biden, Trump responded by saying he wasn't a fan of Meghan's.

Their sudden retreat comes after Prince Harry's high-profile visit to the UK last week

But what about the latest development? After Harry's autobiography "Spare" was released, which included some juicy details about his time in the military and his relationships with family members, there were rumors that it might have caused a visa problem for the couple. Trump even went as far as to say he wouldn't deport Harry if he had lied on his immigration papers – but only because he has "enough problems" with Meghan.

Fitzwilliams points out that while Trump's unpredictability makes it difficult to know what he'll do next, the Sussexes can't be too careful. "He doesn't want any glitches with King Charles, and can you just imagine what would happen if they tried to throw him out? He'd contest it in court, and this would harm Trump's links with the royals."

But don't think for a second that Meghan and Harry are cowering under Trump's thumb. In fact, the couple has been quite vocal about their views on politics, even giving an interview to the Guardian last weekend during Harry's trip to Ukraine.

Meghan is also fresh off a PR blitz following the recent premiere of the second season of her Netflix series in August

Fitzwilliams notes that while they might be careful not to ruffle Trump's feathers, they're less concerned about upsetting the rest of the royals. "They're like a pair of renegades," he says with a chuckle. "Suddenly you decide that you're going to give an interview saying, 'I regret nothing' to a Republican newspaper...it's utterly weird."

But let's get back to their mysterious disappearance from Montecito. Did they really snub the President? Or were they just avoiding any potential drama?

Sources close to the couple reveal that Meghan has been keeping a low profile on social media, only popping up briefly for Prince Harry's 41st birthday celebration on Monday. And when The Scholarly Note.com visited their favorite haunts in Montecito, like Pierre La Fond delicatessen and Lucky's Steakhouse, there was no sign of the royal couple.

The banquet featured boneless free range chicken coated in zucchini – or Ballotine de Poulet Fermier en Robe de Courgettes, as the pretentious French menu termed it

The timing is suspicious, to say the least. With Trump's state visit dominating the headlines, it's not hard to imagine why Meghan and Harry might want to steer clear of any potential controversy.

But here's the thing: this isn't the first time they've been snubbed by a US President. Remember 2022 when Daily Mail revealed that Harry and Meghan tried to hitch a ride home with Joe Biden on Air Force One after Queen Elizabeth's funeral – only to be refused? Yeah, it seems like the Sussexes have some trouble making friends in high places.

For now, it looks like Meghan and Harry will continue to lay low during Trump's visit. But one thing is for sure: they're not going to let anyone push them around without a fight!

The banquet table was set for 160 guests and had 1,452 pieces of cutlery. Guests included Apple boss Tim Cook, nonagenarian media baron Rupert Murdoch and golfer Nick Faldo
