Rick Moranis Unveiled: Icon Returns Incognito to Sydney for Spaceballs Sequel

Beloved 90s movie star Rick Moranis looked almost unrecognisable as he touched down in Sydney on Thursday

Rick Moranis Returns to the Spotlight!

Get ready for a blast from the past, folks! Beloved 90s movie star Rick Moranis is back and better than ever after a decades-long hiatus from the silver screen. The 72-year-old Ghostbusters legend was spotted in Sydney on Thursday, preparing to film scenes for the highly anticipated sequel to the iconic Mel Brooks Star Wars spoof, Spaceballs.

But don't expect him to be recognizable at first glance! Rick cut a low-key figure as he touched down in Australia, sporting a comfortable-looking navy blue fleece jacket over an off-white collared shirt. He paired this with khaki chinos and black sneakers, adding a touch of "incognito" flair with a light grey cap. But we're not fooled – beneath that humble exterior lies the same goofy charm that won our hearts in the 80s.

The actor was spotted wheeling his own luggage and carrying a black backpack on his shoulders, looking every inch the seasoned pro he is. And despite his best efforts to keep a low profile, Rick was still able to sneak in some smiles and chat with airport staff who were escorting him through the terminal.

But the real scoop? Fans weren't far behind, and soon Rick was surrounded by excited onlookers eager for a glimpse of their beloved hero. Happily posing for photos and chatting with an overjoyed fan as he made his way to a waiting car, it's clear that Rick is still got the magic.

So what's brought our favorite Ghostbuster back from the shadows? Well, let's just say it's been a tough road for Rick since losing his wife, costume designer Ann Belsky, to breast cancer in 1991. As a single parent to their two kids, Rachel and Mitchell, he prioritized family over film roles – but now that they're growing up, he's ready to get back out there.

"I just found it was too difficult to manage raising my kids and the traveling involved in making movies," Rick explained in an interview with USA Today way back in 2005. But what he didn't realize at the time was that this "little break" would turn into a long-term sabbatical from the entertainment industry.

But don't worry, folks – Rick hasn't been twiddling his thumbs all these years! He's been keeping busy as a single parent and has even dabbled in writing (that's right, he's written a few children's books!). And though he did get offered a cameo in the 2016 female-led Ghostbusters reboot alongside Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Sigourney Weaver, Rick politely declined.

"I wish them well," he said at the time. "I hope it's terrific. But it just makes no sense to me. Why would I do just one day of shooting on something I did 30 years ago?"

It seems that Rick is once again ready for his close-up – and we can't wait! Joining him in this new adventure are some familiar faces, including former co-star Bill Pullman (who's reprising his role as Lone Starr) and newcomers Josh Gad and Keke Palmer. Mel Brooks himself will also be returning to direct and star as President Skroob.

So mark your calendars for 2027 – that's when the Spaceballs sequel is set to hit theaters! And in the meantime, let's just say we're thrilled to have Rick back in the spotlight. He may have been gone for a while, but it looks like our beloved Ghostbuster is here to stay!
