Burt Reynolds' BFF Alfie Wise Dies at 82: The Unsung Hero Behind Hollywood's Blockbuster Fun

In a shocking turn of events, beloved actor and lifelong friend of the late Burt Reynolds, Alfie Wise, has passed away at the ripe age of 82. According to his fiancée Stephanie Bliss, Wise succumbed to natural causes on July 22 at the Thomas H. Corey Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Palm Beach, Florida.

But what many may not know is that Wise was more than just a talented actor; he was Reynolds' right-hand man, confidant, and partner-in-crime for over four decades. The two actors met in the '70s and quickly became inseparable, starring together in some of Hollywood's most iconic films.

The actor was best known as a costar of Burt Reynolds. He worked with Reynolds on 1974's The Longest Yard, 1977's Smokey And The Bandit, 1978's Hooper, 1981's The Cannonball Run, 1981's Paternity, 1983's Stroker Ace (pictured) and 1984's City Heat

Their on-screen chemistry was undeniable, but their off-screen friendship was just as remarkable. Wise often joked that working with Reynolds was like attending an ongoing block party – you never knew what kind of shenanigans they'd get up to next. And with a filmography that includes classics like The Longest Yard (1974), Smokey and the Bandit (1977), and Hooper (1978), it's no wonder audiences loved watching them together.

But Wise's contributions went far beyond just acting. He served as Reynolds' assistant, helping to manage his busy schedule and keeping him grounded amidst the chaos of Hollywood. In an interview with The New York Daily News shortly after Reynolds' passing in 2018, Wise reminisced about their time together: "He loved his friends, and he really kept us very close... His films were like an ongoing block party. I think the audience caught on to that. You always knew you were going to have a great time with a Burt Reynolds movie."

Born in Altoona, Pennsylvania, Wise began his acting career in 1972, landing small roles in TV shows and films. But it was his chance meeting with Reynolds that catapulted him into the spotlight. Wise went on to appear in numerous hits alongside Reynolds, including The Cannonball Run (1981), Paternity (1981), Stroker Ace (1983), and City Heat (1984).

But Wise's talent wasn't limited to just acting; he also had a knack for writing. In 1983, he starred as paramedic Sidney Pacelli in the ABC medical drama Trauma Center, alongside an all-star cast that included James Naughton, Jack Bannon, Lou Ferrigno, Wendie Malick, and Dorian Harewood.

After retiring from acting in 2000, Wise traded in his script for a real estate license, becoming a successful agent in Jupiter, Florida. His love of friendship and camaraderie remained strong, as he often credited Reynolds with teaching him the value of loyalty and hard work.

As news of Wise's passing spread like wildfire, fans and friends alike took to social media to pay tribute to the beloved actor and Reynolds' closest confidant. "Alfie was more than just a friend; he was family," said one longtime collaborator. "He had a heart of gold and a wit that could charm the birds from the trees."
