Red Carpet Glamour Amidst Critic's Wrath: Brosnahan and Sampaio Shine at Superman Premiere
SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE THAT'S FLYING SO LOW
It was a star-studded evening at the TCL Chinese Theatre in LA on Monday as the new Superman movie hit the red carpet, but unfortunately for director James Gunn, it didn't exactly soar to great heights with critics.
Leading lady Rachel Brosnahan, 34, turned heads in a show-stopping purple gown that left little to the imagination. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star showcased her incredible figure in the skin-tight dress, complete with extensive cut-outs at both the back and waist. The scoop neck highlighted her cleavage, while the backless silhouette gave a glimpse of even more flesh.
Meanwhile, Portugese model Sara Sampaio, 33, looked stunning in a red Grecian-style gown that screamed "Greek Goddess." The actress, who plays villain Lex Luther's girlfriend Eve Teschmacher in the movie, oozed elegance in the fitted waist and draped neckline. She later changed into a sexy black mini dress for the after-party, where she brushed shoulders with the stars, including director James Gunn.
But while the ladies were serving up glamour on the red carpet, it seems the new Superman movie is getting a decidedly mixed reception from critics. Some have even gone as far as to call it "the final nail in the grave for the superhero genre."
One review from The Scholarly Note's sister publication (formerly Daily Beast) slammed Gunn's latest offering, calling it "a convoluted, humourless script" with poor character development and a plot that's "fanciful nonsense." They even went so far as to say that Superman's hero is now a "sweet and sincere do-gooder who uses the word 'dude'" - a far cry from the brooding, Christ-like figure fans have come to expect.
With Marvel veteran Gunn at the helm, it seems he may not be able to save this sinking ship. The review states: "Just as the seemingly indestructible Man of Steel is fatally weakened by kryptonite, so too is the once-unbeatable superhero genre gravely threatened by audience fatigue."
But it's not all bad news - some fans are still excited about the movie, and DC Comics die-hards may delight in Superman's geekiness. However, for many critics, it seems like Gunn's attempt to reinvent the franchise has fallen flat.
