Rebel Wilson's 'Bride Hard' Tackled by Critics: Worst Film of the Year?
Rebel Wilson's Bride Hard Bombs at the Box Office: Critics Call it the "Worst Film of the Year"
In a shocking turn of events, Rebel Wilson's latest film, Bride Hard, has been torn apart by critics, with one calling it the "worst film of the year". The action-comedy, which hit Australian cinemas on Thursday, has received scathing reviews from top critics, leaving many questioning whether this is the beginning of the end for Rebel's career.
Billed as Die Hard-meets-Bridesmaids (yes, you read that right!), Bride Hard follows a mercenary group who take a wedding party hostage, only to discover that the maid of honour, played by Rebel, is actually a secret agent. Sounds promising? Think again! Critics have panned the film, with some going as far as saying they'd rather give Donald Trump a back wax or remove a fatberg from Perth's sewerage system than watch it again.
Ben O'Shea, writing for PerthNow, was particularly scathing in his review, declaring that Bride Hard is "so bad, it's the front runner to claim worst film of the year". He continued, "I'd rather give myself a root canal without anaesthesia than sit through this trainwreck again." Talk about harsh words!
But Ben wasn't alone in his criticism. News Corp critic Leigh Paatsch also took aim at the film, stating that it's "uneven" and "tease an eerie emptiness from scene after scene". He did, however, find some solace in the film's action sequences, praising the "mindless mayhem" as a welcome respite from the "thudding punchlines".
The film has also received a lukewarm reception in the US, where it was released on June 20. With a depressingly low 18% critic score and a slightly better 57% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it's clear that Bride Hard has left audiences underwhelmed.
But what about Rebel herself? The actress is currently facing two separate lawsuits, one from the producers of her film The Deb, who claim she made false and derogatory statements about them. These allegations include accusations of engaging in "inappropriate conduct" towards an actress on set and falsely accusing the producers of embezzling funds.
The timing couldn't be worse for Rebel, who is also being sued for defamation by three producers in the US courts. They accuse her of injurious falsehood, misleading and deceptive conduct, and breaches of contract and director's duties. To make matters worse, she allegedly threatened to block the release of The Deb in Australia unless certain demands were met.
So, what does this mean for Rebel's career? Is Bride Hard a catastrophic flop that will haunt her forever, or is it just a blip on the radar? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure - we'll be keeping a close eye on her next move.
