Penis-Shaped Stage Design: Pop Star's Tour Launch Sparks Controversy
BOONE-GATE: Benson Boone's American Heart Tour Launches with a Cringeworthy Misstep
It was supposed to be the launch of a lifetime for 23-year-old singer-songwriter Benson Boone, but his American Heart tour kicked off on Friday night in St. Paul, Minnesota, with an awkward mishap that has left fans and onlookers talking. The former American Idol contestant took the stage at the Xcel Energy Center, and what was meant to be a grand entrance turned into a cringeworthy moment of embarrassment.
Boone's elaborate stage setup, which he had touted as the "most thought-out show I've ever played," was quickly compared to something else entirely. Social media was flooded with comments pointing out the striking resemblance between the stage design and... well, let's just say a certain body part that's often considered off-limits in polite conversation.
"Um, why is it shaped like that?" one fan asked bluntly. Another chimed in, "Are y'all thinking what I'm thinking?" The responses were unanimous: it was giving "ball sack." While some speculated that the design choice might have been deliberate, others couldn't help but wonder if Boone's team had simply gotten a little too creative.
In an interview with Elle magazine last year, Boone had said, "I've spent the last six months thinking and planning every song—what's going to be on the screens, what I'm going to be doing, and what I'm going to be wearing." It seems that maybe someone should have fact-checked the stage design before it went into production.
When asked about his inspirations for the show, Boone revealed his love for 70s and 80s pop stars like Freddie Mercury and Elton John. "I've always been a fan of the theatrics and spectacle of those eras," he said in an interview with Interview magazine. However, it seems that maybe he should have taken a closer look at his own wardrobe choices, too. Boone has been known to wear some of the tightest and most sparkly outfits on the red carpet.
In a chat about his fans, Boone jokingly mentioned that they often call themselves "The Booners," which might be seen as a bit... cheeky. When pressed for comment, he simply laughed it off and said, "Nevermind."
Despite the mishap, Boone's road to stardom has been nothing short of extraordinary. The Monroe, Washington native discovered his voice when a friend asked him to play piano and sing in a battle of the bands contest during his junior year of high school. From there, he began posting videos on TikTok, which led to a record deal with Night Street Records (owned by Imagine Dragons singer Dan Reynolds) in 2021.
Boone's first single, "Ghost Town," was released soon after and peaked at number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Other hits like "In The Stars" and "Better Alone" quickly followed. And if that wasn't enough, Boone had the ultimate stamp of approval when Taylor Swift invited him to perform for three nights in London last May.
"I believe that everyone on earth has a really solid skill," he said in an interview with Interview magazine. "At least one thing you're really good at, at least one thing you can find passion in." He advised his fans looking for their niche to "find that thing and just figure out a way to make it your job because if you do what you love every day, it is the coolest thing. And I'm very lucky to be able to do that."
Boone's current American Heart tour is a 33-date North American run scheduled to end in October 2025. Will he recover from this embarrassing launch? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure: fans are talking about it.
