Ozzy Osbourne: From Bat Bite to Presidential Dinner

The Wild Ride of Ozzy Osbourne: A Life of Rock 'n' Roll Excess and Redemption

In a career spanning over five decades, Ozzy Osbourne has been many things - a heavy metal icon, a reality TV star, a husband, a father, and a man with a penchant for self-destruction. But few would have predicted that the night he dined with President George W. Bush in 2002 would be nearly as eventful as his entire life.

Born to a working-class family in Aston, Birmingham, Ozzy's early years were marked by poverty, violence, and rebellion. His struggles in school led to a diagnosis of severe dyslexia, but that didn't stop him from leaving at the age of 15 without any qualifications. Instead, he embarked on a journey of petty crime, skiving, and drug use.

It was only when he found solace in music that Ozzy's life began to take shape. He joined forces with his schoolmate Tony Iommi, and together they formed Black Sabbath, one of the most influential heavy metal bands of all time. With their dark, satanic blues riffs and Ozzy's demonic stage presence, they became a global phenomenon.

But as their fame grew, so did Ozzy's excesses. He developed a reputation for wild parties, groupies, and substance abuse. In his own words, "I lit up a joint, sat down on a recliner between two lesbian chicks, and began to sing God Bless America." His marriage to Thelma, the mother of their first child, couldn't survive the strain.

Ozzy's second marriage to Sharon Arden, the daughter of his ex-manager Don, was initially marked by a drinking-and-partying rivalry. But when she decided to stop drinking and focus on their relationship, Ozzy struggled to follow suit. The couple went through numerous ups and downs, including a stint in rehab for Ozzy.

Their tumultuous relationship played out publicly in the media, with Sharon issuing a newspaper appeal after Ozzy went AWOL: "God knows where he is. He could be in Brazil for all I know. I'd just like to say - Ozzy, darling, please call me. You know where to find me. I miss you."

When Ozzy finally resurfaced, it was with a hair-raising apology gift for Sharon - a shoe box full of his locks.

Despite the drama, the couple's love for each other remained strong. They co-starred in their own reality TV show, The Osbournes, which became a global hit and earned them $20 million for the first two seasons. Half the time, Ozzy seemed barely aware that he was being filmed, adding to the hilarity.

But beneath the facade of rockstar excess, Ozzy faced numerous health scares in the 1990s, including a misdiagnosis of multiple sclerosis. He was forced to cut back on touring and focus on his family.

When Sharon was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2002, Ozzy's world came crashing down. He started drinking again, and two years later, had a near-fatal accident on a quad bike. His bodyguard saved him, giving him the kiss of life.

"I was in a coma and I remember having a terrible dream - I was no longer with Sharon," he recalled. "She's met another guy who had his own aeroplane."

He recovered, so did Sharon, and against all odds, their marriage survived. The fear of losing her to cancer made Ozzy understand at last how lucky he was to be alive and to have his wife.

As the years went by, Ozzy continued to tour and record music, albeit with a more measured approach to life. In 2019, he announced that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, but remained defiantly optimistic: "I'm not going to let it beat me."

Ozzy Osbourne may have started as a reckless, self-destructive wild child, but through his journey of rock 'n' roll excess and redemption, he has become a symbol of resilience and love.
