Ocasio-Cortez's Ethics Scandal: Perks for Fiancé Amid 'Spouse' Discrepancies

AOC's Love Life Under Fire: Ethics Committee Scorches Congresswoman for Misleading Fiancé's Status

The drama never ends when it comes to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the fiery 35-year-old congresswoman from New York who has been making waves in Washington D.C. with her outspoken views and unconventional love life. The latest scandal to hit AOC is a doozy: she's been caught fibbing about her fiancé's status as her "spouse" on official government documents.

According to a scathing report from the House Committee on Ethics, released in July 2025, Ocasio-Cortez listed her fiancé Riley Roberts as her spouse on various forms, including those related to attending the 2021 Met Gala. But here's the thing: they're not married! The committee blasted AOC for taking advantage of exceptions meant only for spouses and relatives, while simultaneously failing to disclose her partner's financial interests.

AOC leaves the Carlyle hotel for the Met Gala on September 13, 2021. The House Committee on Ethics reported last month that once the lawmaker pays an additional $2,700 to vendors for her dress and accessories the probe into the matter will be considered closed

This isn't the first time AOC has been accused of bending the rules. Just last month, she was ordered to pay back thousands of dollars after it was discovered that she underpaid vendors for her iconic "Tax the Rich" dress, jewelry, and accessories worn to the Met Gala. The ethics committee found that Ocasio-Cortez had paid below market rates for the items, which were personally gifted by Vogue boss Anna Wintour.

But what's even more juicy is the reason behind Wintour's generosity: she invited AOC and Roberts as guests of honor to the exclusive event! This has raised eyebrows among ethics experts, who point out that Ocasio-Cortez took advantage of her position to gain access to the gala and, by extension, the prestige that comes with it.

The Fiancé Factor

The congresswoman's dress rental was estimated to cost around $3,000 by the House Committee on Ethics estimation. AOC originally paid just $300 to wear the gown

So, what's going on with AOC's fiancé? The committee report reveals that Riley Roberts has been living with Ocasio-Cortez since 2016 and even received an official congressional spouse pin, which allows partners of lawmakers to access restricted areas of the Capitol complex. But here's the thing: Roberts is not considered a spouse in the eyes of the law, and therefore should not have had access to these benefits.

AOC's attorney David Mitrani tried to downplay the issue by arguing that Roberts isn't subject to financial disclosure guidance because he's not technically her spouse. But the committee saw through this, pointing out that Ocasio-Cortez has been claiming Roberts as her spouse on various documents for years.

The Stock Trading Scandal

AOC and Roberts have been together since 2014

This latest scandal comes at a particularly bad time for AOC, who has been pushing for a congressional stock trading ban that would also bar spouses from trading. But the ethics committee's report raises questions about whether Roberts has any financial interests in companies based in Ocasio-Cortez's district - or even if he has investments at all.

It's a curious case of hypocrisy, given AOC's advocacy for stricter regulations on lawmakers' finances. And it's not just the Democrats who are scratching their heads: Tennessee Republican Rep. Tim Burchett told Fox News that he believes AOC would trounce Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer if she ran against him in 2026.

The Gossip Mill

So, what does this mean for AOC's future? Many believe she'll run for higher office - possibly even the presidency in 2028. But despite her denial of such rumors, Ocasio-Cortez has been busy touring the country with Sen. Bernie Sanders as part of their "Fighting Oligarchy" tour.

And it seems like everyone is eager to see what AOC will do next. As one Republican pundit quipped, "Frankly, I'm looking forward to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez primarying him (Schumer) very soon, and seeing him run out of town because even no one believes what he says."

For now, it's clear that AOC's love life and financial dealings will continue to make headlines - and raise eyebrows. Stay tuned!

Many have speculated that AOC would win should she run against incumbent Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer
