Bruce Willis' Wife Opens Up About His Heartbreaking Battle with Frontotemporal Dementia

In a shocking and emotional revelation, Bruce Willis' wife Emma Heming Willis has spilled the tea on her husband's devastating battle with frontotemporal dementia (FTD). The 70-year-old Die Hard star was diagnosed with the degenerative brain condition in 2023, and his wife is now speaking out about the struggles they face every day.

"We get moments," Emma, 47, revealed to Diane Sawyer in a preview for the special "Emma & Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey" airing Tuesday night on ABC. "It's like...his laugh. You know, that hearty laugh? And sometimes you'll see that twinkle in his eye or that smirk, and I just get transported."

'And it's just hard to see because as quickly as those moments appear, (snaps fingers) it goes. That's hard,' she told Diane Sawyer

But don't be fooled - these moments of pure joy are all too fleeting. As quickly as they appear, the condition takes over once again, leaving Emma heartbroken and struggling to come to terms with what's happening to her husband.

"It's hard to see because as quickly as those moments appear, it goes," she said, becoming emotional. "That's hard."

But Emma isn't just talking about her husband's struggles - she's also shedding light on the shocking truth that an estimated 50,000 people in the US are suffering from FTD, a condition that's notoriously difficult to diagnose.

'We get moments,' Emma Heming Willis, 47, told Diane Sawyer in a preview for the special Emma & Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey airing Tuesday night on ABC

The Willises saw multiple doctors before finally getting to the bottom of Bruce's rapid decline. "He felt a little removed, very cold, not like Bruce, who is very warm and affectionate," Emma explained. "Going from one extreme to the other was alarming and scary."

As a wife, mother, and caregiver, Emma has been by Bruce's side every step of the way. She shares two daughters with him - Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11 - while her husband has three adult daughters with ex-wife Demi Moore: Rumer, 37, Scout, 34, and Tallulah, 31.

When the diagnosis was finally confirmed, Emma was left reeling. "I remember hearing it and just not hearing anything else," she said. "It was like I was freefalling."

'It's his laugh, right? Like, he has such a hearty laugh and you know, sometimes you'll see that twinkle in his eye or that smirk and I just get like transported,' she said; (Willis is seen here with adult daughters Rumer, Scout and Tallulah and ex-wife Demi Moore)

And as for whether Bruce understood what was happening to him? "I don't think Bruce connected the dots," Emma admitted.

Now, as a full-time caregiver, Emma is doing everything in her power to support her husband through this incredibly challenging time. And while it's not easy - Bruce has lost his ability to speak and is struggling with mobility issues - Emma remains optimistic.

"Bruce is still very mobile, and he's in really great health overall," she said. "It's just his brain that is failing him."

As the family adapts to this new reality, they're finding ways to communicate with Bruce that are beyond words. "We have a way of communicating with him that is just different," Emma explained. "But I'm grateful. I'm grateful that my husband is still very much here."

The special "Emma & Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey" will be released on September 9, giving fans and viewers a glimpse into the couple's remarkable love story - and their inspiring journey through one of life's toughest challenges.

In related news, Emma has also written a book about her experience as a caregiver, offering hope and support to others who may be navigating similar situations.
