Modern Family Star Julie Bowen's Shocking Health Revelation: Pacemaker at Age 29
Julie Bowen Spills the Tea on Her Secret Health Issues
In a shocking revelation, Modern Family's beloved star Julie Bowen has opened up about her health struggles, including being fitted with a pacemaker at just 29 years old! The actress, now 55 and looking better than ever, shared her candid story on the Inside of You podcast with Michael Rosenbaum.
According to Julie, it was her sister Annie Luetkemeyer, who was fresh out of medical school, that first diagnosed her with sick sinus syndrome - a heart rhythm disorder caused by increased activity in her vagus nerve. But what's even more astonishing is how Annie, being the vigilant sibling she is, caught on to Julie's low heart rate.
"I remember we were on vacation and she just happened to have her stethoscope with her," Julie recalled. "She was like, 'I wanna listen to your heart.' And I'm thinking, 'Oh no, this is gonna be a thing!' But little did I know, it was going to change my life forever."
Annie's sharp ears picked up on Julie's unusually low resting heart rate - a whopping 30 beats per minute, compared to the normal range of 60-100 BPM. "She was like, 'That's not what they've been telling you, and it's not just runner's heart or whatever,'" Julie shared. "And I'm thinking, 'Okay, maybe she knows more about this than I do.'"
But what followed was a whirlwind of medical tests, doctor's appointments, and ultimately, the insertion of a pacemaker to regulate Julie's heart rhythm.
"I was 29 years old when I got it," Julie revealed. "I remember thinking, 'Oh my God, my life is over.' But as it turned out, I didn't die... yet!"
Michael Rosenbaum couldn't help but chuckle at Julie's response, saying, "You're lucky you didn't die before that!" To which Julie replied, "Yeah, I guess so! They said I wouldn't probably die from it, but I'd start passing out. And there was this vague feeling... like I'd been holding my breath for a while, and then I'd feel light-headed."
But here's the thing: despite having to replace her pacemaker batteries three times over the years, Julie often forgets that she even has one! "It's just become part of me at this point," she said with a chuckle.
This isn't the first time Julie has spoken candidly about her health issues. In 2023, she revealed on The View that she finally got plastic surgery to fix her post-baby belly after 11 years of putting it off.
"I had twins when I was 39 years old," Julie shared. "And let's just say, they ripped me open... and then some!" She laughed, referencing the complications she faced during pregnancy.
But what really caught our attention is how Julie's sister Annie played a pivotal role in her health journey. We can't help but wonder: how many other secrets are hidden beneath that charming smile of Julie Bowen's?
As it turns out, being a mom to three kids - including 18-year-old Oliver and 16-year-old twins Gus and John - has kept Julie on her toes. And we're not just talking about the parenting part! With her candid approach to health and wellness, Julie is proof that age is just a number.
So there you have it: Julie Bowen's shocking secret revealed in all its glory. Who knew being fitted with a pacemaker at 29 could lead to a life of good health and wellness? Only time (and a sisterly diagnosis) will tell!
