Mariah Carey's Impromptu VMA After-Party Singing Sparks Slurring Speculations!

Mariah Carey seemed to be a bit off during an after party at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday

MARIAH CAREY'S WILD AFTER-PARTY SCENE: SINGER SEEMS "TOTALLY UNTOGETHER" AT MTV VMAS CELEBRATION

The Queen of Christmas, Mariah Carey, proved that she's still got it – and then some – at the MTV Video Music Awards after-party on Sunday. But as she took to the stage to croon one of her classic hits, "I Know What You Want," alongside rapper Busta Rhymes, it was clear that the 56-year-old songstress had a few too many cocktails under her belt.

According to eyewitnesses, Carey seemed "sleepy" and "totally off" as she attempted to sing along with Rhymes. At one point, she closed her eyes and started to focus on her voice, but it was clear that she was struggling to keep up with the rhythm. Some fans even thought they caught her slurring a few words – but hey, it's an after-party, right?

The party took place at the private members' club The Twenty Two where several stars sipped cocktails while networking. Carey wore a black leather dress and sunglasses

Carey's reps have yet to comment on the incident, but insiders are telling TheScholarlyNote.com that the singer may have been distracted by the crowd of adoring fans who were snapping pics and videos with their phones. And let's be real, when you're a pop icon like Mariah Carey, it can get pretty overwhelming.

But things only got more interesting from there. As Rhymes egged her on, urging her to "sing," Carey seemed to come alive – or at least, she tried to. She slurred out a few words of encouragement ("Okay, we gotta promote this album right now..."), before launching into an impromptu rendition of her new single.

The problem was, it wasn't exactly the most coherent performance. At one point, Carey demanded that producer Jermaine Dupri come up to the mic, declaring "Can we play a Jermaine Dupri record? I don't know what to say, but like I love you." And when Rhymes asked her for a note, she responded with a slurred "Oh my God, you guys are so cute..."

It was clear that Carey was having the time of her life – and maybe even a little too much fun. According to sources close to the singer, she stayed at the party until 2 am, surrounded by her A-list pals.

And if you thought things couldn't get any juicier, they did: as Carey took to the mic for the final time, she began to rattle off some (ahem) less-than-flattering words about the crowd. "These people are so loud," she huffed. "Hello? We ain't tryin' to hear y'all. We don't wanna hear y'all."

But hey, at least she's consistent – after all, we've seen this side of Mariah before (remember that infamous New Year's Eve meltdown?). Still, it's clear that the singer is feeling confident about her new album, Here for It All, which drops on September 26.

The icon seemed a little sleepy as she listened to the rhythm then started to slowly sing the song

Carey's style was, as always, on point: she wore a black leather dress and jacket with lace-print high-heeled boots, plus plenty of diamond jewelry. And let's not forget those cheekbones – or that hair! The singer looked absolutely stunning in gold earlier in the evening, taking to the stage at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York for a show-stopping performance.

Of course, no one would expect anything less from the one and only Mariah Carey. But still... we can't help but wonder: was it really necessary to have that many cocktails, Mariah?

At one point she closed her eyes so that she could focus on her voice and she seemed proud of what she belted out, but it did not appear as if she was totally together
