Lorde Reflects on Gender Identity: 'I Didn't Feel Like a Woman'

Lorde is continuing to discuss her gender identity in a new interview set to air on ABC

Lorde Unveils Her True Self: "I'm a Different Woman Now"

In a shocking revelation, New Zealand-born pop sensation Lorde has finally opened up about her journey of self-discovery in an explosive new interview set to air on ABC's Take 5 With Zan Rowe. The 28-year-old songstress, who has been making waves with her latest album Virgin, is ready to shed light on the most intimate and personal aspects of her life.

In a candid conversation with host Zan Rowe, Lorde discusses her favorite songs, but what follows is a heart-wrenching exploration of her struggles with identity dysphoria. The pop star's words are laced with vulnerability as she delves into the complexities of her relationship with femininity and her journey towards self-acceptance.

Lorde's reference to "cutting cords" in her song "Man Of The Year" is a metaphor for the transformation she has undergone. When asked by Zan what she meant by "I take my knife and I cut the cord," Lorde reveals that it was a symbol of breaking free from societal expectations and embracing her true self.

"It's not just about ending a relationship," Lorde explains, "it's also about letting go of a version of femininity that I had been attached to for so long. I don't know if I ever really felt like a woman before that point." The singer's words are laced with emotion as she confesses, "I just sort of chose to take myself off the map in a few ways."

This revelation comes on the heels of Lorde facing criticism after her previous interview with Rolling Stone. In May, she sparked controversy when she appeared to come out as non-binary, only to later clarify that she identifies as a cis woman. However, her conversation with Dazed magazine made it clear that her journey is far from over.

Lorde revealed the meaning behind her lyrics to Man of the Year that a tie that was severed was a 'version of femininity' that she had previously embraced

"I feel really bad," Lorde admitted in the interview with Dazed. "I misquoted Chappell asking if I was non-binary... Some days I can't wear women's clothes, and some days I feel totally out-of-body." This candid admission showcases the complexity of her identity struggles and highlights the ongoing process of self-discovery.

But Lorde's conversation with Zan doesn't stop at identity; she also opens up about her use of ecstasy (MDMA) and its impact on her life. The singer credits MDMA therapy with helping her overcome stage fright, but when asked if it was "her drug" of choice, she simply states, "Yeah."

However, Lorde's admission of taking the substance too young is a stark reminder of the risks associated with its use. Her words are laced with caution as she reflects on how drug chemistry affects perception and her ongoing battle with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a severe form of PMS.

'I don't know if I¿d ever really felt like a woman before that point. I just sort of chose to take myself off the map in a few ways,' she said

Lorde explains that she was diagnosed with PMDD after stopping birth control, which led to significant mood swings every month. She now takes the smallest dose of Prozac once a month, which has made a huge difference in her life. "It's been exact days of the month – but it's changed the game," she says.

With her musical comeback in full swing, Lorde is sending fans into a frenzy with her latest album and singles. Her new interview on Take 5 With Zan Rowe is set to air on ABC at 8:30 pm on Tuesday and will be available on ABC iView.
