Lena Dunham Fights Back Against Hollywood Body Shamers

Lena Dunham addressed the 'merciless' body shamers in Hollywood in a new interview with Variety

Exclusive Scoop: Lena Dunham Spills Tea on Body Shamers, Reveals Protective Measures for Too Much Cast!

Lena Dunham is serving up piping hot tea as she dishes out about her forthcoming Netflix series, Too Much, and its impact on body positivity in Hollywood! The 39-year-old writer/actress dished to Variety about the "merciless" body shamers who seem to lurk around every corner.

As we all know, Lena has been no stranger to controversy, especially when it comes to her own physique. Remember those infamous Girls days? Yeah, she's been there, done that, and got the T-shirt (or should we say, the sample-size dress?). In fact, Dunham revealed that she's had her fair share of body changes throughout the years due to life, illness, aging, and menopause – and let's just say it's been a wild ride!

While chatting up her new show Too Much this week, she addressed the 'merciless' criticism of her figure

But here's the thing: Lena is all about setting boundaries for herself and those around her. She warned potential haters that if they dare to come at any of her actors (especially those who appear in the racy sex scenes in Too Much), she'll be ready to throw down! "If anybody has anything to say about any of my actors – I keep my mouth shut on most things these days but try a b**. I'm not playing around here. It's the only time that I'm going to be taking my hoops out, ready to fight," she declared.

And can we talk about her cast for a second? Too Much boasts an impressive lineup of talented stars, including Megan Stalter and Will Sharpe as the main characters, along with models-turned-actresses Adwoa Aboah and Emily Ratajkowski. We can only imagine the drama that might ensue once the show premieres on July 10th!

But back to body positivity – or rather, the lack thereof in Hollywood. Lena admitted that she probably wasn't protective enough of herself during the Girls era, and we can totally understand why. After all, who wouldn't want to avoid the constant scrutiny and criticism? "I probably wasn’t protective enough of myself," she confessed.

'I have been in Hollywood at every size. I have been a sample size, I have had my body change because of life, illness, aging, menopause. And it is merciless wherever you are,' she lamented

Now, let's get real for a second – has the success of shows like Girls and Too Much actually made different body types more acceptable? Lena seemed skeptical about this idea, saying that while we've had our moments of body positivity, it seems to have taken a backseat in recent years. "I wish I could say yes, but I really don’t. I think we had this moment: Body positivity was here, and then it was gone," she revealed.

Of course, there are exceptions – people who genuinely prioritize their health over aesthetics. But let's be real, folks; judgment is pretty inevitable when it comes to bodies. As Lena pointed out, "Just because I’ve become used to it for myself doesn’t mean that I feel comfortable about it for anyone else."

In the end, it seems like Lena is all about promoting self-acceptance and individuality – especially when it comes to her own body. After all, she's been open about not letting the constant scrutiny get her down (remember those Girls days?). As she told The Sunday Times STYLE in June, "I can’t say I was never rocked, but I’m lucky enough that my thing has never been looking at a picture of myself and picking myself apart or feeling tortured about how I looked – it’s just not my area. I have my own stuff I’m tortured about, but it wasn’t that."

And what's behind her decision to cast Megan Stalter as the lead in Too Much? A desire to avoid having her body dissected again, of course! As she told The New Yorker last year, "I was not willing to have another experience like what I'd experienced around [Girls] at this point in my life. Physically, I was just not up for having my body dissected again."

So there you have it – Lena Dunham's take on body positivity, Hollywood, and the importance of setting boundaries (and possibly taking your hoops out to fight). Stay tuned for Too Much when it premieres on July 10th!
