Kim Kardashian Defends Herself in Wrongful Death Row Inmate Accusation Lawsuit
Kardashian's Killer Blunder: Reality Star Sued for Wrongfully Accusing Innocent Man of Double Murder
In a shocking turn of events, Kim Kardashian West has been hit with a lawsuit by an innocent man she wrongfully accused of being a death row double murderer. The 44-year-old reality star shared a photo of Ivan Cantu, 60, on her social media last February, claiming he was the same man on Texas' death row who was scheduled to be executed for murdering two people.
But it turns out that Kardashian's claim was nothing short of a fabrication. The real Ivan Cantu is an innocent man from Westchester, New York, who has now filed a lawsuit against Kardashian for libel and slander, alleging that her false accusations have caused him serious emotional distress and damaged his reputation.
According to court documents, Kardashian's team mistakenly used the wrong Ivan Cantu's mugshot in their Instagram post, which was meant to raise awareness about the case of a Texas death row inmate who was eventually executed. The post claimed that the wrong Ivan Cantu was scheduled to be executed in just two days and urged her followers to sign a petition demanding that the execution be halted.
But when the real Ivan Cantu discovered his photo being used in Kardashian's social media campaign, he took to Facebook to set the record straight. "To all my friends and family, I am not getting executed, some idiot who runs @kimkardashian used my picture of Ivan 'Abner' Cantu," he wrote.
The lawsuit claims that Kardashian's actions were intentional and caused Cantu to suffer from embarrassment, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and counseling. The suit also alleges that Kardashian's team was negligent in their research and failed to verify the identity of the man they were featuring.
Kardashian's lawyers have attempted to dismiss the lawsuit, claiming that the Instagram post constitutes her exercising her freedom of speech under anti-SLAPP laws in California. However, Cantu's legal team argues that Kardashian's actions were harmful and caused him significant emotional distress.
In a sworn declaration filed with the court, Kardashian acknowledged her mistake and apologized for any harm she may have caused. "I engage in this work because I am passionate about it and without any commercial benefit or intent," she said. "Unfortunately, in a story that was posted on my Instagram and Facebook accounts, we used a picture of a different Ivan Cantu."
Kardashian's social media manager, Travis White, also gave a written statement to the court, claiming that he had conducted a Google search for more pictures of Cantu and mistakenly selected the wrong man's photo.
The suit seeks compensatory damages, although it does not specify an amount. Forbes estimates Kardashian's net worth at $1.7 billion dollars.
As the drama unfolds, the question remains: will Kim Kardashian West be held accountable for her reckless behavior? Only time will tell.
