Katie Couric Parodies Sydney Sweeney's Ad: A Heartfelt Call for Cancer Screenings

Sydney Sweeney's controversial American Eagle ad has sparked a surprise parody video starring none other than Katie Couric

Sydney Sweeney's Scandalous Ad Takes a Surprising Turn with Katie Couric's Colorectal Cancer Campaign

In a move that's left fans stunned, legendary journalist Katie Couric has taken on the infamous American Eagle ad controversy in a hilarious and heartwarming parody video. The 68-year-old icon is advocating for regular colorectal cancer screenings, and her campaign is getting plenty of attention - mostly because it eerily resembles Sydney Sweeney's original ad that sparked outrage earlier this year.

For those who may have missed the drama, Sydney's 28 was slammed after appearing in a risqué ad for the denim brand. Critics accused American Eagle of promoting eugenics and far-right politics with its emphasis on Sydney's "great genes." The company has since defended the campaign, insisting it's all about the jeans - but the controversy only fueled more debate.

Earlier this year Sydney, 28, sparked outrage after appearing in an ad for the denim brand, with the campaign's emphasis on her 'great jeans' sparking accusations it was supporting eugenics and far-right politics

Enter Katie Couric, who's taking the conversation in a whole new direction with her public service announcement for Lead From Behind, a non-profit organization dedicated to colon cancer awareness. The video begins with Katie lounging on a hospital bed, wearing an unbuttoned denim top that looks suspiciously like Sydney's iconic look from the original ad.

"Speaking of genes," Katie says with a wink, "did you know that most people who develop colon cancer aren't genetically predisposed to it? That's why doctors recommend regular screenings for everyone over 45." The camera cuts to Katie getting ready for her own colonoscopy, and we can't help but think back to the time she underwent one live on TV in 2000.

As Katie awaits her exam, a voiceover declares: "Katie Couric gets regular screenings and if you're 45 or older, you should too." The similarities to Sydney's ad are uncanny - but this time around, it's all about saving lives. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of death in the US, and Katie knows firsthand how devastating it can be.

The ad resembles Sydney's campaign visually, with Katie styled in a similar manner as the Anyone But You actress

The disease took her first husband, John Paul "Jay" Monahan III, from her at just 42 years old. Jay was a brave soul who fought his illness with courage and dignity - and Katie's been carrying on his legacy ever since. She founded Stand Up to Cancer and the Jay Monahan Center for Gastrointestinal Health in his honor.

Katie's also spoken out about her own struggles with cancer, revealing she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022. But it's her work that keeps her going - especially when it comes to spreading awareness about colorectal cancer. "I'm a grandmother now," Katie says with a smile, "and I think about all the people who've been affected by this disease. I want to make a difference."

With Lead From Behind, Katie's taking on the challenge of educating Americans about the importance of regular screenings. And we have to give her props - she's not afraid to poke fun at herself and even reference the infamous American Eagle ad in her campaign.

Sweeney's ad was later defended by American Eagle, which released a statement saying the ad 'is and always was about the jeans'

The organization behind the video, Maximum Effort, was founded by none other than Ryan Reynolds' creative agency. They're winking at the controversy with a cheeky "Wink Wink" comment on social media - but we think it's time to take this conversation seriously and get people talking about colon cancer prevention.
