Josh Brolin Blasts Jonah Hex: The Star-Studded Flop He Regrets

Josh Brolin blasted his 2010 DC Comics blockbuster Jonah Hex in a new interview

Josh Brolin Unleashes Scathing Verdict on DC Comics Blockbuster "Jonah Hex"

In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz, veteran actor Josh Brolin, 57, has come out guns blazing against his 2010 DC Comics blockbuster, "Jonah Hex". The film, which boasted an impressive cast including Michael Fassbender, Megan Fox, and John Malkovich, was widely panned by critics and flopped at the box office. And according to Brolin, it's not just the film itself that's to blame – but also the decisions made behind the scenes.

"I brought in a lot of people," Brolin revealed, listing off the star-studded cast he had assembled for the project. "I brought in Malkovich, I brought in Megan, I brought in Michael Shannon who was totally cut out. I brought in Fassbender." And despite the promise of this all-star lineup, Brolin admitted that the final product just didn't deliver.

The actor is pictured at the Hollywood premiere of the film back in 2010

"You have this silver platter of actors and the movie doesn't necessarily turn out as good," he explained, leaving little room for doubt about his feelings on the project. But it gets even juicier – when asked if he thought the director's cut was any better, Brolin laid the blame squarely at the feet of the studio.

"The director's cut of Jonah Hex was pretty good," he revealed, "but the studio butchered it during post-production." Ouch! It seems that in this case, Brolin is not mincing words – and we can't help but wonder what really went down behind closed doors.

This isn't the first time Brolin has publicly trashed "Jonah Hex". Back in 2023, he sat down with Variety to share his thoughts on the film's misfire. And let's just say, it was a doozy of an interview. "I loved that [director Jimmy Hayward] was excited," Brolin began, "but he just didn't have the experience and he didn't treat it like I would imagine somebody would want to treat it – to run back to their house at the end of their every day and watch tonal inspirations and [Martin] Scorsese movies or this or that."

The star-studded movie featured huge names like Michael Fassbender , Megan Fox , and John Malkovich, but was savaged by critics and bombed at the box office

"I just think we made a big mistake with the director – not to blame it all at him, because that was my choice, that was my bad choice," Brolin continued. "And then the studio took it over and every time that's happened, in my experience, it has only gotten worse... That's what happens when you start cutting to this idea of pandering for an audience, and how testing can bite you in the a**."

"It's like, you don't know what the audience is going to want," he explained. "Jonah Hex was them taking the movie back and saying, 'How can we make this the most accessible movie?' And they ended up making the least accessible movie." Ouch! It seems that Brolin has a few choice words for those involved in the project.

But it's not all bad news – since his dust-up with "Jonah Hex", Brolin has gone on to star in some major hits, including "Sicario", "Deadpool 2", and the critically-acclaimed "Dune" films. And now, he's back in the spotlight with his latest project, "Weapons".

Starring alongside Julia Garner, "Weapons" follows a group of characters in a small town where 17 children from the same classroom vanish in one night. But what sets it apart is its unexpected blend of horror and comedy – and fans are eating it up! "Weapons is even more of a blast than I thought it would be," gushed one fan on social media. "Swings so confidently between horror and comedy that it makes tonal whiplash its b*h."

Another fan raved, "#Weapons is a slow-burn ride packed with pitch-black humor, creeping dread, and an ending that goes completely off the rails – in the best way." And with over $150 million at the box office and two weeks at number one, it's clear that "Weapons" is more than just a dark horse contender.

And if you're wondering what really happened behind the scenes of "Jonah Hex", rest assured that Brolin has made amends with director Jimmy Hayward. In fact, in an interview with GQ magazine last year, he revealed that Hayward had apologized for his part in the mess.

But hey – as they say, all's well that ends well! And with a string of hits under his belt and "Weapons" flying high at the box office, it seems that Josh Brolin is on top of the world. But one thing's for sure – he won't be holding back any punches when it comes to speaking his mind about his film projects in the future.
