DOMINIC CHIANESE'S BIG NIGHT: THE SOPRANOS STAR OPENS UP ABOUT HIS FAMOUS FRIENDS, SINGING CAREER, AND LIFE OF DRAMA
Get ready for a night to remember as Dominic Chianese, the 94-year-old actor who stole hearts as Corrado "Junior" Soprano in HBO's hit series The Sopranos, takes center stage at The Town Hall in New York City on June 30. In an exclusive event, "Dominic Chianese: One Night Only," the veteran actor will regale audiences with stories of his famous friends, including Al Pacino and James Gandolfini, and showcase his impressive singing skills.
But this isn't just a nostalgic trip down memory lane – Chianese is ready to spill the tea on his decades-long career, filled with iconic roles in films like The Godfather Part II, Dog Day Afternoon, and Boardwalk Empire. And, believe it or not, even more surprising tales of his time as a teacher before he became an actor.
FRESH FROM THE SET
In a candid chat with thescholarlynote.com, Chianese revealed that his famous friends are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to stories he'll be sharing at the event. "The stories come out, and the songs sort of portray the stories too," he teased, hinting at the juicy tales he's accumulated over the years.
Fans of The Sopranos will be thrilled to hear that Chianese will be regaling them with behind-the-scenes stories from the hit HBO series. And, of course, no discussion of his career would be complete without mentioning his iconic character Corrado "Junior" Soprano – one of the few characters to survive throughout the show's run.
SINGING FROM THE HEART
But Chianese's talents don't stop at acting. The actor is also a gifted singer, having released two albums, including the Italian-language album Ungrateful Heart. And, as he revealed to thescholarlynote.com, it was none other than Stevie Van Zandt who taught him that singing isn't just about technical skill – but about pouring your heart and soul into every note.
"I like to sing live, but Stevie Van Zandt taught me that you can really sing with your heart and let it out in the studio," Chianese said, his voice filled with enthusiasm. "He taught me that, so when we did Core 'ngrato, and [Sopranos creator David Chase] said, 'We're going to use that,' that made me realize in that recording, you can let it all out in a recording studio."
A LIFE OF DRAMA
Chianese's life hasn't always been a walk in the park, however. In fact, he began his career as a teacher – a path his father had encouraged him to take. But after just a few years, Chianese found himself at odds with the educational system.
"It didn't work out because they wouldn't let me teach my way," he recalled. "They gave me a curriculum that was so foreign to my students... I loved teaching. I would've stayed. I was 35 at the time, but I couldn't. They wouldn't have me do it my way, and so I had to leave."
A LOOK BACK AT HIS CAREER
Throughout his illustrious career, Chianese has appeared in a wide range of roles – from authority figures like judges and priests to gangsters and even a priest or two. And yet, despite the many twists and turns, he's remained committed to his craft.
"I played a lot of authority figures, lawyers, judges, criminals," he chuckled. "I played priests. It's a wonderful career. It's a very long career, a checkered career."
A NIGHT TO REMEMBER
So what can audiences expect from "Dominic Chianese: One Night Only"? According to the actor himself, it'll be a night of stories, songs, and laughter.
"I believe in teaching," he said, his eyes twinkling with warmth. "I love children, but you can only teach what you believe... I would love to see [former students] come to the show, and they'll remember me. Maybe one of them will come to the show, and they'll remember me."
