Joe Jonas Breaks Silence: Inside the Pressure of Purity Rings and Childhood Fame

Joe Jonas, 35, made a startling confession as he and his brothers addressed their infamous purity rings while on Penn Badgley's podcast Podcrushed on Thursday

The Jonas Brothers Open Up About the High-Pressure World of Celebrity

In a shocking confession, Joe Jonas revealed that he and his brothers, Nick and Kevin, were bombarded with invasive questions from reporters early in their careers. The trio sat down with Penn Badgley on his popular podcast, Podcrushed, to discuss the grueling experience of being under the microscope at a young age.

As the music sensation rose to fame in the early 2000s, they became synonymous with their Christian backgrounds and iconic purity rings. However, this wholesome image came with a steep price: reporters probing into their private lives like voyeurs. Joe, 35, confessed that journalists would ask uncomfortable questions about their sex lives, pushing them to discuss topics they weren't ready or willing to tackle.

Joe revealed that reporters posited questions about if they were waiting until marriage to have sex, and claimed that some would even threaten to write that the siblings were 'in a cult' if they didn't oblige; L-R Nick, Joe, and Kevin pictured in 2008

"It was like, 'Are you waiting until marriage to have sex?'" Joe recalled, his voice dripping with frustration. "And if we didn't answer in a way that satisfied them, they'd threaten to write that we were part of some kind of cult." The 35-year-old singer's words dripped with disdain as he described the experience.

Nick, 32, chimed in, providing context on the industry culture of the time. "It wasn't just us," he said matter-of-factly. "There was a whole class of young people coming up, and we were all under this microscope." He acknowledged that there's been a significant shift in what's considered acceptable to ask entertainers during interviews.

"I think it's a great thing," Nick continued, his voice filled with optimism. "Now, it would be completely outside the realm of possibility for someone to ask a 14-year-old about their sex life. It's just not something that's done anymore."

The brothers reflected on being approached with inappropriate questions early in their career

The brothers' purity rings were a central part of their image in the early 2000s. Joe explained that wearing them was a community-driven decision, one that he and his siblings made as teenagers. "It was something our church taught us," he said, reflecting on the experience. "We wanted to wait for the right person."

However, as they entered adulthood, the pressure to maintain this image became overwhelming. Reporters would often quiz them about their faith, asking invasive questions like "What is God?" and "Is there a God?" Joe described the stress of being asked to speak on these topics as "scary" and "freaking us out."

Eventually, the siblings reached a breaking point, drawing a much-needed boundary. "We got to a point where we were like, 'F* this,'" Joe exclaimed. "We realized that we could figure out who we are on our own terms." It was a liberating moment for the brothers, one that allowed them to shed their carefully crafted image and forge their own paths.

In the years since, each brother has built a life of his own. Kevin, 37, was the first to tie the knot with Danielle Jonas in 2009. The couple welcomed two beautiful daughters: Alena, 11, and Valentina, eight. Joe shares daughters Willa, five, and Delphine, three, with ex-wife Sophie Turner. Nick is dad to three-year-old daughter Malti, whom he shares with wife Priyanka, 43.

The Jonas Brothers' story serves as a cautionary tale about the pressures of fame and the importance of maintaining one's boundaries in the public eye. As they've navigated the ups and downs of their careers, they've come to realize that true freedom comes from embracing their individuality and forging their own paths.

Circling back to their purity rings, Joe explained that it had been 'something in the community of [their] church where that was what everybody else was doing around 10, 11 years old'
