James Blunt Reveals Shocking Reason Behind Asking Carrie Fisher to be Godmother

In a jaw-dropping revelation, singer-songwriter James Blunt has spilled the tea on why he asked the late Carrie Fisher to be godmother to his son. The 51-year-old musician revealed that there was more to it than just a sweet gesture of friendship.

When James and his wife Sofia Wellesley welcomed their first child, he invited Carrie to take on the special role, and she happily accepted. However, James' motives behind asking Carrie were not entirely altruistic. In an interview with People magazine, he confessed that he had been worried about Carrie's well-being and hoped that being a godmother would encourage her to "look after herself" better.

The two had met in the early 2000s when James was recording his debut album Back To Bedlam and living with Carrie in Los Angeles. They remained close friends over the years, but James' concern for Carrie's health was evident in his request. Tragically, Carrie passed away in December 2016 at the age of 60 after going into cardiac arrest, with drugs found in her system during post-mortem tests.

James reflected on their friendship and how it blossomed over time. "I met Carrie when I was dating one of her family friends," he recalled. "We had a group lunch in London, and I told her everything – my plans to become a musician, heading to Los Angeles, not knowing where I'd live... She invited me to stay with her."

Initially, James kept his distance from Carrie, only interacting with her at night when he returned from the studio. However, after three months, he had a breakthrough moment when he overheard her staff discussing her bipolar disorder diagnosis at the age of 24.

"I was shocked," James admitted. "I just could see she was skipping between subjects rather quickly, but her brain was still working." This sparked a deep conversation between them, and they began talking until the early hours of the morning.

Their friendship grew stronger over time, with Carrie becoming James' confidante and closest friend. He shared that their late-night conversations continued for years, with Carrie's wit and humor making him laugh until the wee hours.

However, despite her tough exterior, Carrie struggled with addiction and mental health issues throughout her life. James' request to be godmother was a poignant reminder of his concern for her well-being, which ultimately went unheeded.

In a touching tribute to their friendship, James revealed that he made Ed Sheeran the godfather to his second child, while Carrie remains an integral part of their family's history.

As James prepares to embark on his 20th anniversary Back to Bedlam tour, fans can expect a glimpse into his personal life as well. He recently teased an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, writing on Instagram: "Hello America! Having a little pre-tour catch up with the wonderful @kellyclarkson this morning!"

The tour will kick off in mid-June and take James throughout the US before ending with three shows in Mexico. With this new chapter in his career, James Blunt is ready to share more of his story with fans, including the complexities of his friendship with Carrie Fisher.
