Inside Ellen's 'Scared-to-Death' Staff: Former Guest Exposes Chilling Claims

Comic Adam Carolla said Tuesday that staff on Ellen 'were scared, real scared' during his two guest spots on the program, providing a pair of anecdotes as purported proof

Ellen DeGeneres' Toxic Legacy Exposed: Comedian Adam Carolla Spills All About Her "Hellish" Show

The drama surrounding Ellen DeGeneres just got juicier! Comedian and former talk show host Adam Carolla has come forward with shocking new claims about the queen of daytime TV's notoriously toxic work environment. In a bombshell podcast appearance, Carolla revealed that staff on DeGeneres' show were "scared to death" during his two guest spots, and he's got the receipts.

Carolla, 61, shared a pair of cringe-worthy anecdotes that paint a picture of a workplace where fear and anxiety reigned supreme. The first incident saw him recalling being repeatedly reminded by a frazzled page to avoid discussing meat or beef on air – a clear nod to DeGeneres' infamous vegan lifestyle at the time.

Ellen DeGeneres' talk show was canned in May 2022 over allegations of toxic behavior.  (DeGeneres is pictured at the 2020 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles)

"I was just sitting in my dressing room, and this segment producer comes in and says, 'Okay, so we've gone over all the stuff we're going to talk about. You know, Christmas vacation or whatever it is,'" Carolla recounted. "And I'm like, 'Yeah, yeah.' And he's like, 'You're not going to talk about meat or beef or anything like that, right?' And I'm like, 'No, no, I'm just going to stick to the script.'"

The staffer's nervous demeanor didn't go unnoticed by Carolla. "I was like, 'This guy's scared to death,'" he laughed. The incident took place in March 2012, during one of Carolla's two guest spots on DeGeneres' show.

But that wasn't the only time Carolla witnessed the fear factor firsthand. He also recalled a conversation with a writer for the show who had worked under DeGeneres' tyrannical reign. "He said to me, 'Adam, Ellen is the worst person I've ever met,'" Carolla revealed. "And this guy was like a seasoned pro – he'd written for Rosie O'Donnell's daytime show in the 90s and had seen his fair share of divas. But even he couldn't stand DeGeneres."

Carolla appeared on the program twice in total, and is seen here, in 2012, during one of those appearances

Carolla also mentioned that the writer, who had signed an NDA (non-disclosure agreement), had worked under both DeGeneres and Rosie O'Donnell – a surprising claim given O'Donnell's reputation as a fiery and outspoken personality.

"Rosie was the Official Chub Club," Carolla joked, referencing O'Donnell's book foreword. "But this guy said Ellen was the worst of the bunch." The comedian also mentioned that DeGeneres' veganism was likely a factor in her increasingly dictatorial behavior on set.

Carolla's claims come as no surprise to those who were already familiar with the allegations surrounding DeGeneres' show. In 2020, ten former and one current employee came forward with stories of a toxic work environment, leading to an apology from the embattled host.

'She's not going to be mean to me. I'm a guest on on the show, right? So, I wouldn't know it from my exchanges,' Carolla explained to Emily Jashinsky on her podcast Tuesday. 'I would know it with how her staff was cowering'

But now that the truth is finally out, Carolla is reveling in the fact that his suspicions have been vindicated. "I knew it all along," he said smugly. "And now everyone knows what I knew 15 years ago."

DeGeneres, 67, has since spoken about the allegations, telling The Hollywood Reporter in 2022 that she had learned from her mistakes and trusted that the difficult experiences had been a necessary part of her growth as a person.

But Carolla isn't buying it. "She's not a nice person at all," he said bluntly. And with his explosive claims, it seems like the public finally has a better understanding of what really went down behind the scenes of DeGeneres' show.
