Gymnast Livvy Dunne's Heartbreaking Ankle Condition Ends Olympic Dreams

Livvy Dunne has lifted the lid on the gruesome ankle problem that killed her Olympic dreams

EXCLUSIVE: Livvy Dunne Spills the Beans on the Shocking Ankle Injury that Crushed Her Olympic Dreams!

Get ready for a shocking revelation straight from the horse's mouth! Olympian hopeful and gymnastics superstar, Livvy Dunne, is speaking out about the gruesome ankle problem that derailed her dreams of competing at the biggest stage in sports.

The 22-year-old LSU alum, who has become one of the most recognizable faces in gymnastics, opened up to TheScholarlyNote.com's 'What's Your Story? With Steph McMahon' podcast about the devastating osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) diagnosis that forced her to hang up her leotard at just 16.

'Part of my ankle bone died,' she told Steph McMahon on the 'What's Your Story?' podcast

"I was literally competing on a hurt ankle at the 2018 USA Championships, and part of my ankle bone died," Livvy revealed, her voice trembling with emotion. "It's called an OCD. It just...died. So my Olympic dreams died with it. It was so painful."

For those unfamiliar with the condition, OCD is a rare joint disorder where the cartilage beneath the joint dies due to lack of blood flow. According to the Mayo Clinic, this can occur after an injury or months of high-impact activity – exactly what Livvy's rigorous training regimen entailed.

The former LSU star, who began competing at age 3 and was homeschooled by her mom from seventh grade to focus on gymnastics, revealed that she suffered the debilitating injury while still a junior athlete. Despite trying to power through the pain, it eventually took its toll on her body.

Dunne grew to become one of the richest and most recognizable gymnasts in the world

"I did compete for Team USA and we even won gold in Italy, which was an incredible honor," Livvy reflected. "But it wasn't the right environment for me, and I kept getting hurt. So, I decided to take a step back, focus on my health, and enjoy the sport again in college."

Despite not having undergone surgery, Livvy took pride in her ability to heal without medical intervention – a testament to her determination and resilience.

Fast-forward to today, and Livvy is now calling it quits on her gymnastics career after five seasons with LSU. The decade-long journey that saw her sacrifice social life, proms, and family vacations for the sake of Olympic glory came to an abrupt halt due to this very same ankle issue.

"I gave up a lot, but I wouldn't change it," she said wistfully. "Competing for Team USA was what I wanted to do. So, I had to make sacrifices – and that's okay."

As Livvy looks back on her remarkable journey, she can take pride in knowing that she represented the United States at the highest level – a feat few get to experience.
