Golden Girls' Hidden Rivalry: Bea Arthur's Feud with Betty White Revealed!
The Golden Girls' Secret Feud: Bea Arthur and Betty White's Nasty Behind-the-Scenes Rivalry Exposed
Get ready for a dose of behind-the-scenes drama! In a shocking revelation, it turns out that Bea Arthur and Betty White, the beloved stars of the iconic sitcom Golden Girls, weren't as chummy off-screen as they seemed to be on screen. According to co-producer Marsha Posner Williams, the two actresses had a serious beef that ran deep.
During an appearance at the Pride Live! Hollywood festival this week, Williams dished about the tensions between Arthur and White, which only intensified when the cameras weren't rolling. "When that red light was on [and the show was filming], there were no more professional people than those women," she said of the pair. But as soon as the lights went off, all bets were off.
Williams recalled that Arthur would often vent to her about White's antics on set, using some pretty colorful language. "Bea used to call me at home and say, 'I just ran into that [c**t] at the grocery store. I'm gonna write her a letter,'" she said. "And I'd say, 'Bea, just get over it for crying out loud. Just get past it.'"
It seems that White's sunny disposition and enthusiasm were enough to drive Arthur crazy. According to Williams, Arthur would often seem annoyed when White broke character during scenes. "Betty would break character in the middle of the show [and talk to the live audience], and Bea hated that," she revealed.
But why did these two TV legends have such a love-hate relationship? According to Williams, it was due to their vastly different acting backgrounds. Arthur came from a theater background, while White had a television background. And when it came time for the show's seven-year run to come to an end, Arthur refused to continue her contract, effectively killing off the beloved series.
"The show would have continued after seven years," Williams explained. "Their contracts were up and...the executives went to the ladies, and Estelle [Getty] said, 'Yes, let's keep going,' and Rue [McClanahan] said, 'Yes, let's keep going,' and Betty said, 'Yes, let's keep going.' And Bea said, 'No f**king way,' and that's why that show didn't continue.'"
Even when the cameras weren't rolling, the tension between Arthur and White was palpable. Williams shared a shocking anecdote about how Arthur once referred to White in a rather...unflattering manner on a flight. "Literally Bea Arthur, who I cast in something else later on, just said, 'Oh, she's a fking ct,' using that word,'" revealed casting director Joel Thurm.
In 2011, White addressed the rumors of on-set issues with her and Arthur in an interview with The Scholarly Note.com. She admitted that Arthur wasn't a fan of her positive attitude, saying: "Bea had a reserve. She was not that fond of me. She found me a pain in the neck sometimes."
It's clear that these two TV legends had a complicated relationship, to say the least. But as fans of Golden Girls, we can't help but be fascinated by the behind-the-scenes drama that went down.
