Gilles Marini Calls Time on 'And Just Like That': Is It Really Time to Say Goodbye?
EXCLUSIVE: Sex and the City Alum Gilles Marini Spills Tea on And Just Like That, Kim Cattrall's Exit, and More!
Gilles Marini, the hunky French actor who stole hearts as Dante in the 2008 Sex and the City movie, is dishing out all the juicy deets on the latest developments surrounding the HBO spinoff And Just Like That. In a bombshell interview with The Scholarly Note.com, Marini is weighing in on the show's current controversy, Kim Cattrall's absence from the series, and what he really thinks about the direction of the show.
First up, Marini is sounding off on fans' frustrations with And Just Like That season 3. "Everything takes its time. It goes up, and then it goes down. We have to know and understand when it's time to go," he revealed, implying that maybe it's time for the show to wrap up. But why? Marini thinks the series needs a major reboot: "Maybe taking the side of one of the characters and having this history behind Sex and The City, but making something so clearly different... somebody else come in with something new, you know? Really fresh, like the storyline has to be completely shattered."
He's not alone in his assessment. Fans have been left fuming after episode eight's awkward reunion between Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Aidan Shaw (John Corbett), as well as Miranda Hobbes' (Cynthia Nixon) nearly relapse on alcohol. Marini agrees that the show could use a fresh start: "And something that is meaningful nowadays. Everybody loved this show because everybody could relate. Let's have a show where really everyone can relate a little bit [more]."
When asked about Kim Cattrall's decision not to return as Samantha, Marini was diplomatic: "To each their own. Sometimes people want to start something, and then when they're done, they're done with it. At the end of it, look at the career she has, I mean, everything she’s done. She doesn't need [anything]. It’s her decision, of course."
Marini did take a moment to acknowledge Cattrall's contributions to the original series: "I think one of the most amazing things that I had the chance to do in my life was Sex And The City." He also reflected on how appearing in the film changed his career trajectory: "Michael Patrick King, the director of the film, he said, 'Listen, when the movie comes out, your life will never be the same and your phone will never stop ringing.' And I'm like, why? Why is he saying that? And now I know why he said that."
The actor's career has taken many twists and turns since his breakout role in the Sex and the City film. He began working as a baker and fireman before moving to the United States to pursue modeling. After finding success on Dancing with the Stars, Marini earned runner-up positions alongside partner Cheryl Burke in seasons eight and fifteen.
In a somber note, Marini recently paid tribute to former Cosby Show actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who tragically passed away at age 54. Sharing a photo of them, he wrote: "He was a light in so many lives, kind, thoughtful, and full of spirit. It's hard to believe he's gone. I'll always remember the moments we shared, the laughter, the talks, and the quiet understanding. My deepest condolences to his family, his loved ones, and everyone who was lucky enough to know him. May his memory be a blessing and may he rest in peace."
