Pearce's mother, Anne, broke the news to her young son in a matter-of-fact manner, saying, "Well, you went really weird after your dad died. I thought about getting you a psychiatrist." This was, of course, her tongue-in-cheek way of showing sympathy and support during this difficult time.

The family, who had moved from England just five years prior to their hometown of Geelong, Australia, remained in their home while Pearce took on the responsibility of caring for his disabled elder sister, Tracy. Tracy suffers from Cornelia de Lange syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects cognitive development. Pearce has spoken fondly about the bond he shared with his sister and how he would help her get ready for bed, do homework, and even practice clarinet and tenor saxophone.

"I became the family dad at a young age," Pearce explained in an interview with WSJ. "Mum was very clever about easing me into the role. She didn't say, 'I need you to help me.' She said, 'It's so wonderful that you're being responsible.'"

In 2016, as he prepared to welcome his first child with then-partner Carice Van Houten, Pearce reflected on the devastating loss of his father.
