From Fame to Ruin: Alex Lloyd's Harrowing Journey Back to Music
Alex Lloyd Reveals Shocking Truth Behind His Disappearance from Music Scene
Australian singer-songwriter Alex Lloyd has finally broken his silence on why he abruptly vanished from the music scene in the early 2000s, leaving fans stunned and wondering what had happened to their beloved "Amazing" crooner. In a candid interview on Monday's episode of Australian Story, Alex, now 50, opened up about the dark forces that drove him away from the spotlight and his struggles with addiction, which nearly destroyed him.
It all began when Alex was catapulted to fame with his chart-topping single "Amazing," which topped the Triple J Hottest 100 list and earned him sold-out shows. However, behind the scenes, Alex was dealing with a chaotic childhood marked by an abusive partner of his mother's and a difficult relationship with her. Music became his escape, and he began performing as a busker to cope with the trauma.
But success came at a cost. After writing "Amazing," which was allegedly co-written with a truck driver who sued Alex for millions (the case eventually being withdrawn), Alex was left with crippling legal fees of $300,000. The revisited trauma of his mother's death sent him spiraling into depression and addiction.
"I'd lost my drive, I'd lost my passion to do things," Alex confessed, revealing how he turned to booze and junk food to numb the pain. "I was 168kg, and I was going out doing shows in front of 10,000 people, winery gigs, with my face on a massive screen...I didn't feel very good about myself, and I didn't want to be on stage, but I needed the money."
Alex's addiction problems worsened when he developed chronic neck pain. His doctor prescribed him oxycodone (oxycontin), which Alex admitted he had no idea was so addictive. He tried to kick the habit multiple times but found it impossible.
"I'd go through withdrawal, and it would be like being on the edge of a cliff," Alex said. "I didn't know how to get off it...It was like I was stuck in this nightmare."
But in a stunning turnaround, Alex has come out on top. After undergoing surgery to control his weight and having a neck operation to alleviate his pain, he also received drug counseling to kick his oxycontin addiction. Today, he's three years clean.
"It's funny," Alex mused, reflecting on his journey. "If you'd told me 10 years ago that I'd be where I am today...I wouldn't have believed it."
With a newfound perspective, Alex is now ready to share his music with the world once more. His first studio album in 12 years will soon be released, marking a triumphant return for this talented singer-songwriter.
"I'm seeing the world differently," he said, "and I think I'm ready to share this part of me now and be scrutinized again."
