Fox Sports Faces Backlash: 'Pathetic' Kelce-Swift Wedding Skit Sparks Outrage
Fox Sports' Cringeworthy Attempt at Humor Backfires: 'My Big Fat Chiefs Wedding' Trailer Sparks Outrage Among Swifties
In a bizarre move that has left fans of both Taylor Swift and the NFL scratching their heads, Fox Sports aired a ridiculous skit during their pre-game show last Sunday. The network's attempt to be funny fell flat, instead earning them the wrath of Swifties worldwide.
The offending segment was a fake movie trailer for 'My Big Fat Chiefs Wedding,' a supposed romantic comedy about the alleged love story between Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift. The 2000s-style trailer was a cringeworthy attempt at humor, featuring a voiceover that declared, "She's one of the most successful musical artists in the world, and he's six-foot-five. But somehow, they still found love."
The trailer then cut to an actor playing a hilariously inaccurate portrayal of Kelce, who exclaimed, "Hey guys, it's me, Travis Kelce. Guess what? I'm getting married." The rest of the skit was filled with cheap jokes about Swift's roots in the suburbs of Philadelphia and her supposed budding interest in football.
To add insult to injury, NSYNC member Joey Fatone made a cameo appearance via FaceTime to the fake Kelce, playing along with the absurdity. When asked if he wanted to participate, Fatone responded with a mock disdain, "No, I'm not doing this. I'm a Giants fan." The fake Kelce then quipped, "Well, I'm a Backstreet Boys fan. Bye bye bye."
Needless to say, fans of the sport and Swifties alike were not amused by the skit. Many took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their outrage and disappointment.
One fan wrote, "As soon as it started, I just turned the channel. I don't pay millions of dollars for a sports network to make me laugh... or at least, not that kind of humor." Another tweeted, "I have to imagine some illegal substances and cold pizza at 2 am was involved in the planning and maybe even the execution of this."
The scholarlynote.com described the trailer as a "tough watch," echoing the sentiments of many who witnessed the embarrassing spectacle. Even Kelce's fiancée seemed to be taken aback by the skit, with some speculating that she might have had something to say about it behind closed doors.
In an attempt to salvage their reputation, Fox Sports did manage to interview Kelce during a segment with Erin Andrews, where he gushed about his love for his fiancée. When asked about the wedding plans, Kelce exclaimed, "It's been an exciting, exciting ride up to this day... I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with her."
The backlash against Fox Sports has been swift and severe, with many calling for a boycott of the network until they issue a formal apology. It remains to be seen how long it will take for the network to recover from this embarrassing gaffe.
One thing is certain, however: when it comes to comedy, it's best to leave it to the professionals – or at least, not make fun of one of the most successful artists in the world at the same time as you're trying to be funny.
