Ewan McGregor's Luxury Lair Left Leaking: Star Wars Hunk's £2million Mansion Roof Rejected by Council

In a shocking turn of events, Ewan McGregor, the dashing Trainspotting and Star Wars actor, has been dealt a major blow in his bid to repair the lead roof at his luxurious £2 million Carse of Gowrie retreat in Perthshire, Scotland. The Hollywood hunk's plans to replace the damaged roof with a single-ply membrane have been flatly refused by Perth and Kinross Council, leaving him and his actress wife Mary Elizabeth Winstead, 40, reeling.

The drama began when McGregor, 54, submitted plans to his local council to repair the lead roof, which was deemed "beyond repair" due to fatigue cracking, splits, and failed flashings. The document highlighted the risks of lead theft, citing the value of the precious material as a major security concern. In an attempt to mitigate these risks, the architect suggested replacing the lead with Sarnafil, a non-target material for thieves.

However, in a surprise move, the council rejected McGregor's proposal, citing concerns that the new roof structure and materials would compromise the historic fabric and special architectural interest of the C-listed building. The authority emphasized that the proposed changes would not preserve the "fine detail character" of the property and would be contrary to the local development plan.

This latest setback comes on the heels of McGregor's previous success in securing permission to erect a replacement garage, create a new master bedroom and bathroom suite, and repair "yellowing" and "water damage" to the mansion. It appears that this particular project has hit a roadblock, leaving the actor and his wife feeling disappointed and frustrated.

The £2.35 million property, which McGregor purchased in 2023 after it had been on the market for offers above £2.15 million, boasts an impressive 15,000 square feet of living space spread across three floors. The estate includes a gate lodge, courtyard outbuildings, a two-bedroom flat, stores, and a wine cellar on the lower ground floor.

One of McGregor's most famous starring roles was in the 1996 film Trainspotting

McGregor's love affair with Scotland has been well-documented, having met his second wife, Winstead, on the set of the TV series Fargo. He previously spoke about missing living in Scotland, citing his family, the landscape, air, smell of rain, green colors, people, and culture as things he misses dearly.

The star is currently starring in London's West End in the stage adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's The Master Builder alongside Elizabeth Debicki, who previously played Princess Diana in The Crown. With properties in St John's Wood, north-west London, Los Angeles, and now Scotland, it seems McGregor has a taste for the finer things in life.

In an interview last year, McGregor joked about feeling a "pull home" to Scotland, stating that whoever created the world started with Scotland and got it right. It appears that his love for the country remains unwavering, even as he faces this latest setback in his bid to restore his luxurious retreat.
