Erik Per Sullivan Chooses Academia Over Hollywood: Malcolm in the Middle Actor Enrolls at Harvard!
MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE REBOOT: ERIK PER SULLIVAN, THE TV KID WHO WENT FROM DEWEY TO HARVARD
In a shocking turn of events, the actor who played lovable troublemaker Dewey Wilkerson on Fox's beloved sitcom Malcolm in the Middle has revealed he's traded in his acting career for academia - and we're talking Harvard University! The news was spilled by none other than Erik Per Sullivan's TV dad, Bryan Cranston, during a podcast chat.
The 69-year-old actor, who played Hal Wilkerson on the show, dished about his former co-star's surprising decision to hang up his acting hat. "He's really, really smart, and he's getting his master's at Harvard right now," Cranston gushed to TheScholarlyNote.com.
It seems Erik, a Massachusetts native who played Dewey from 2000-2006, has been out of the Hollywood loop for so long that even Bryan Cranston was left stunned. "He goes, 'Oh God, no, I haven't acted since I was 9 or something. So I'm not into it,'" Cranston recalled.
But don't get us wrong - Erik's decision to pursue a higher education has nothing to do with his lack of interest in acting. In fact, the young actor previously attended the University of Southern California from 2009-2010, showing he had an early taste for academia.
The news comes as Malcolm in the Middle prepares to make its comeback on Disney+ with a four-episode revival. While Erik won't be joining his former co-stars - including Frankie Muniz, Justin Berfield, Christopher Masterson, and Jane Kaczmarek - fans will get to see a new face take on the role of Dewey: Wynonna Earp's Caleb Ellsworth-Clark.
Cranston revealed that he's been pushing for a Malcolm in the Middle reboot for a decade, thanks to passionate fan feedback. "I just started wearing [creator Linwood Boomer] down until he said, 'I've got an idea.' I said, 'good,'" Cranston chuckled.
The actor confessed that reuniting with his old castmates was the highlight of the experience. "Seeing the family was the best part," Cranston gushed. "It's been 20 years since we said goodbye, and now we're seeing the family again and each person... All the boys were around the same age, now, that I was when I started 25 years ago. They've got kids of their own. It's just great to see."
As fans eagerly await the return of their favorite '90s sitcom, one thing is clear: Erik Per Sullivan's decision to trade in his acting career for Harvard University is a move that will leave everyone talking.
