Emma Stone Shaves Her Head for a New Role: The Emotional Journey Inside

Emma Stone followed in the footsteps of Sigourney Weaver, Demi Moore, and Natalie Portman by having her head shaved on camera with a 1.5-millimeter blade for her new movie, Bugonia

EMMA STONE SHAVES HER HEAD, BUT WE WON'T MIND IF SHE DOESN'T LET IT GROW BACK (EVEN THOUGH JENNIFER LAWRENCE SAYS SHE LOOKED BEAUTIFUL)

In a shocking move that has left fans and fellow actresses alike in awe, Emma Stone has joined the ranks of Sigourney Weaver, Demi Moore, and Natalie Portman by shaving her head for her new movie, Bugonia. The 36-year-old Oscar winner's dramatic makeover was captured on camera with a 1.5-millimeter blade, leaving many wondering if she'll let her locks grow back.

According to sources close to the actress, Stone's decision to shave her head was not taken lightly. Moments before the big reveal, Emma burst into tears in her trailer while remembering how her mother, Krista Stone, lost all of her hair during her courageous battle with triple-negative breast cancer. We can only imagine the emotional toll this must have taken on the actress.

"It's a brave move," Stone recalled thinking in a recent interview with Vogue. "My mom was like, 'I'm so jealous. I want to shave my head again!'" The actress and her mother even celebrated Krista's cancer-free status in 2008 by enlisting none other than Paul McCartney to design a tattoo of birds' feet for them - a nod to their shared love of the Beatles' iconic song "Blackbird."

But what makes this move even more remarkable is that Stone will be donning a wig on screen, as her character Michelle, the CEO of a major pharmaceutical company, is subjected to a rather...unusual procedure by two conspiracy theorists (played by Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis). The sci-fi black comedy promises to be a wild ride, but we're not sure if Emma's shaved head will add an extra layer of realism to her performance.

We caught up with Stone at the New York Film Festival on October 5, where she was spotted rocking a stylish wig. "I was bummed I wasn't going out with it," she lamented. "Just straight-up bald. I think that would have been fun." We can only imagine how stunning she must have looked - and we're not surprised to hear that her best friend Jennifer Lawrence thought so too.

Emma recalled thinking in her Vogue cover story Monday: 'She actually did something brave. I'm just shaving my head. My mom was like,

"I really didn't want her to shave her head," Lawrence wisecracked via email. "I had already lived through the Billie Jean King haircut, thanks for asking!" But in all seriousness, Jennifer gushed over Emma's new look: "Honestly, she looked beautiful. She pulled it off."

This marks Stone's sixth collaboration with director Yorgos Lanthimos, following The Favourite (2018), Bleat (2022), Poor Things (2023), Kinds of Kindness (2024), and the music video for Jerskin Fendrix's song Beth's Farm (2025). Bugonia is set to premiere at the 82nd Venice Film Festival on August 28, where Emma will likely be flaunting her signature glamour. But don't worry, folks - she'll have plenty of time to rock that shaved head look before it hits US theaters October 31 and UK theaters November 7.

As we know, motherhood has a way of changing one's priorities - and for Stone, becoming a mom to four-year-old Louise Jean has been a game-changer. "It's a clichéd thing to say, but it changes everything," she gushed in an interview with The Scholarly Note (formerly Dailymail.com). "And simplifies everything." We can only imagine how fulfilling this must be for the actress.

But what about her personal life? Sources close to the couple reveal that Emma and her husband, Saturday Night Live writer Dave McCary, have sold their newly renovated Austin, TX mansion for a whopping $23.5M - no doubt to make way for their growing family. We can only imagine how lovely it must be to raise little Louise Jean in such a beautiful setting.

And as if all this wasn't enough, Stone and her husband co-founded their production company Fruit Tree back in 2020, with plans to produce a range of films and TV shows. Looks like Emma's got a busy future ahead - but we're sure she'll always find time for that stunning shaved head look.

Emma recalled the first shower she took after her dramatic makeover was 'amazing,' but she concealed her bald head beneath a wig while attending the New York Film Festival on October 5 (pictured)

'I was bummed I wasn't going out with it,' Stone lamented. 'Just straight-up bald. I think that would have been fun'

The Arizona-born beauty scoffed that her hair has been growing back 'pretty slowly for how long it's been' but her best friend Jennifer Lawrence (L, pictured in 2024) loved the shaved look: 'Honestly, she looked beautiful. She pulled it off'

Bugonia marked Emma's sixth collaboration with director Yorgos Lanthimos after The Favourite (2018), Bleat (2022), Poor Things (2023), Kinds of Kindness (2024), and the music video for Jerskin Fendrix's song Beth's Farm (2025)

Emma will likely glam up to attend the world premiere of the Focus Features flick on August 28 held at Italy's Sala Grande during the 82nd Venice Film Festival
