Eminem vs. Mariah Carey: Unraveling the Feud Behind '8 Mile'?
Mariah Carey Spills Tea on Eminem Feud: Did a Role Rejection Spark Their Infamous Beef?
The drama between Mariah Carey and Eminem has been brewing for decades, but it seems we're finally getting some answers about its origins. In a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, the 56-year-old songstress dropped some major tea about her infamous feud with the 52-year-old rapper.
According to producer Damion Young's claims earlier this summer, Eminem had approached Carey about playing his mother in the semi-autobiographical movie 8 Mile back in 2002. However, Carey has now acknowledged that there may be truth to this story – but she's not taking ownership of the drama it sparked between them.
"From what I heard, there is truth to that, but I don’t think that he actually - well, who knows who approached who?" Carey told Cohen with a nonchalant tone. When asked if this could have been the catalyst for their long-standing feud, she shrugged, "No, maybe, it depends what he’s thinking. I really don’t care."
But here's the juicy part: Carey has always maintained that there was no romance between her and Eminem, but his claims to the contrary have caused tension between them over the years. And if you thought things couldn't get any juicier, producer Damion Young revealed in a separate interview on the TFU Podcast that he had introduced the two on a three-way call after Eminem asked to speak with Carey about the movie role.
"So I go to Mariah, and I’m like, 'Look, Eminem wants to meet you,' and she’s like, 'No,'" Young recalled. "Like, 'I'm not getting up in that.' And I said, 'Well, there's this movie.'" After he connected Carey and Eminem on a call, Young claimed Eminem immediately asked the singer, '"I want you to play my mother"... so her insecurities kicked in big time."
It seems like Eminem was a bit too forward for Carey's taste. But what's even more interesting is that Kim Basinger ended up playing the role of Eminem's mother in the film instead – and won an Oscar for it, no less!
The origins of the feud between these two music icons date back to the early 2000s, when they both claimed to have had a romance. While Eminem has stated that they dated for six months, Carey has always denied this, saying there was never anything romantic between them.
Their beef escalated in 2002 with Eminem dissing Carey on tracks from his album The Eminem Show – including "Superman" and "When The Music Stops." In response, Carey fired back with her song "Clown," where she claimed she had never even been involved with the rapper.
But things really took a turn for the worse in 2009 when Eminem released the track "Bagpipes From Bagdad," which not only dissed Carey but also her ex-husband Nick Cannon. Carey retaliated with her song "Obsessed," and Eminem responded with "The Warning."
It seems like this beef has been brewing for decades, with each side firing off diss tracks at the other. But it's clear that Carey is not letting Eminem get under her skin – even if he did try to woo her into playing his mother in a movie.
As she told Cohen on Watch What Happens Live, "I know there are some people out there who think I'm crazy... but hey, at least I'm not neutered."
