Ellen DeGeneres Confirms UK Move: 'Staying for Good' Amid US Concerns
Ellen DeGeneres Spills All: Why She Fled America and Why Same-Sex Marriage Might Just Be a Thing of the Past
In a jaw-dropping new interview, Ellen DeGeneres has revealed why she packed up her bags and left the United States - and it's all because of President Trump. The 67-year-old comedian and TV host, who now calls the idyllic Cotswolds home with her wife Portia de Rossi, shared the bombshell news while chatting with broadcaster Richard Bacon at the Everyman theatre in Cheltenham.
As it turns out, Ellen and Portia (who tied the knot back in 2008) made the drastic decision to flee the States after Trump's election in 2016. "We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis," Ellen recalled. "And we're like, 'He got in.' And then we were like, 'We're staying here.'" It seems that the prospect of living under a Trump presidency was just too much for the couple to bear.
But it's not all sunshine and rainbows (although Ellen did share a stunning photo of herself and Portia gazing out at a double rainbow on her social media). The Emmy-winning host also spoke about the alarming trend of anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment in America, including efforts by the Baptist Church to reverse same-sex marriage. "The Baptist Church in America is trying to reverse gay marriage," Ellen warned. "They're trying to literally stop it from happening in the future and possibly reverse it."
As a result, Ellen revealed that she and Portia are already exploring the possibility of tying the knot again - this time in the UK, where same-sex marriage is legal. "Portia and I are already looking into it, and if they do that, we're going to get married here," Ellen said, her voice laced with determination.
But Ellen's move abroad wasn't just a response to Trump's presidency; she also praised the UK for its more progressive values and way of life. "It's absolutely beautiful," she gushed about her new home. "We're just not used to seeing this kind of beauty. The villages and the towns and the architecture - everything you see is charming, and it's just a simpler way of life."
Ellen also opened up about her personal struggles during the tumultuous times of the #MeToo movement, which led to controversy surrounding her own show. "I think that I learned a lot, and there were some things that came up that I was shocked and surprised by," she reflected. "It was eye-opening, but I just trust that that had to happen."
Despite the challenges she's faced, Ellen remains optimistic about the future - even if it means starting anew in a foreign land. As she told The Hollywood Reporter back in 2020, "I have to just trust that whatever happened during that time, which was obviously very, very difficult, happened for a reason. I think that I learned a lot, and there were some things that came up that I was shocked and surprised by."
And while her latest Netflix special, Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval, received mixed reviews, it seems that Ellen's true calling is sharing her story with the world - even if it means taking a few risks along the way.
