Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi Make a Public Appearance Amidst New Bullying Allegations
SCANDAL ROCKS HOLLYWOOD: ELLEN DEGENERES' TOXIC WORK ENVIRONMENT EXPOSED
It's been a tumultuous few years for Ellen DeGeneres, but it seems like her troubles are far from over. Fresh on the heels of allegations that she created a toxic work environment on her now-defunct talk show, a new bombshell has dropped in the form of comedian Adam Carolla's latest claims about his time as a guest on her program.
Carolla, who hosted The Man Show alongside Ellen's former ABC colleague Jimmy Kimmel in the early 2000s, took to a podcast appearance this week to reveal just how "scared" he was during his two visits to DeGeneres' show. And by scared, we mean absolutely terrified. According to Carolla, he was subjected to repeated reminders from nervous producers about what topics not to discuss on air.
"I knew they were scared because it's like, I was just sitting in my dressing room and their segment producer came in, and he went, 'All right, so we went over all the stuff we're going to talk about,'" Carolla recounted. "'And you're not going to talk about meat or beef or anything like that, right?' And I go, 'No, I'm not. I'm just going to talk about the stuff we talked about - going on vacation at Christmas or the kids or you know, their anecdotes.'"
The incident reportedly took place in 2012, during a time when DeGeneres was still a devout vegan (a lifestyle she's since abandoned). Carolla recalled that the producer returned to his dressing room just 20 minutes later, looking like he'd just seen a ghost.
"Okay. All right. Okay. All right," the poor guy stammered before Carolla's appearance on air. "And he came back like 20 minutes later right before I went out, and he's like, 'Okay, but don't talk about beef or meat or any[thing],'"
Carolla couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of it all. "I was like, 'Oh, this guy's scared to death.'"
But that's not all - Carolla also shared a second anecdote from his time on the show, one that involved a writer for DeGeneres branding her "the worst person [he'd] ever met." Yes, you read that right. The writer in question had previously worked for Rosie O'Donnell's daytime show during the 90s and was still adamant that DeGeneres took the cake when it came to mean behavior.
"Later on, I talked to someone who signed an NDA, so I won't say his name," Carolla explained. "But he wrote for Ellen, and I just went, 'How's Ellen?' And uh, he said, 'Worst person, uh, worst person.'
"Not worst person I've worked for. Worst person I've ever met.'"
When asked by conservative commentator Emily Jashinsky if he'd seen DeGeneres' toxic behavior firsthand, Carolla replied, "She's not going to be mean to me. I'm a guest on the show, right? So, I wouldn't know it from my exchanges. I would know it with how her staff was cowering."
It seems like Carolla isn't the only one who's had a negative experience working with DeGeneres. As we previously reported, ten former and one current employee came forward in 2020 to accuse her of creating a toxic work environment on her show.
The allegations led to an apology from DeGeneres herself, but it seems like those responsible for the toxic atmosphere are still being held accountable. Showrunners decided to plug the program in 2022, and it's been reported that DeGeneres has since abandoned her vegan lifestyle (though we can't say we're shocked).
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, DeGeneres seemed to downplay the allegations against her. "I have to just trust that whatever happened during that time, which was obviously very, very difficult, happened for a reason," she said.
"I think that I learned a lot, and there were some things that came up that I was shocked and surprised by. It was eye-opening, but I just trust that that had to happen."
But it seems like DeGeneres' troubles are far from over. As more and more anecdotes about her alleged on-set behavior continue to come out, it's becoming increasingly clear that she's not the "nice" person everyone thought she was.
The latest controversy comes as Ellen and her wife Portia de Rossi were spotted in London on Tuesday, looking like they're trying to put their troubles behind them. The couple affectionately held hands as they stepped out onto Bond Street, with DeGeneres sporting a navy blue cardigan over a pale-yellow striped polo shirt.
But it's hard to feel bad for the power couple when you consider that they moved to the UK "for good" earlier this year, citing Donald Trump's election as their reason. When asked last week if she was staying in the UK because of Trump, DeGeneres replied simply, "Yes. We were hopeful for Kamala Harris. We were very hopeful and we thought at least let's get a place here."
It seems like Ellen's got her priorities straight - and it doesn't involve being kind to her employees.
As Carolla so aptly put it during his podcast appearance this week, "She's not a nice person at all."
