Dining with the Elite: Inside the World of Private Chefs

Chef Camille Aubert, who mainly cooks French Provencal cuisine for her clients, says some private chefs choose to cook only for celebrities

The Secret Lives of Private Chefs: A Glimpse into the World of the Rich and Famous

Imagine being a fly on the wall, witnessing the inner workings of the luxurious lives of the rich and famous. For private chefs like Mike Fishpen, Camille Aubert, Kit Davis, and Mick Binnington, this is their reality. They have had access to some of the most high-profile individuals in the world, from celebrities to royalty, and have cooked for them in their opulent mansions, on luxury yachts, and even on private jets.

But what's it really like to be a private chef? We spoke to these culinary experts to find out about their most outrageous requests, shocking encounters, and surprising observations. From catering secret sex parties to serving caviar for breakfast, we take a peek into the fascinating world of private chefs.

Chef Mike Fishpen, who has been a chef for over 30 years, says private chefs are now more accessible than ever to everyone, not just the super-rich

The Ice Sculpture Incident

Mike Fishpen, a seasoned private chef with over 15 years of experience, recalled one particularly awkward moment when he was hired to cook for an anonymous client. Upon arriving at the location, Mike was asked to unveil an ice sculpture that had been kept under wraps. As he pushed aside the ice, he was shocked to see that it was shaped like a rather...ahem...male genitalia.

"That's when I realized I was probably cooking for a sex party," Mike said with a chuckle. "I never met the people I was cooking for, but at least I didn't have to deal with anyone running around naked."

The Bling-Bling Lifestyle

Private chefs like Camille Aubert and Mick Binnington have had their fair share of luxury experiences. Camille has cooked on private jets, prepared five-course menus for family gatherings, and even served caviar breakfasts. But what's most surprising is how nice the clients are.

"You think that everyone is going to just treat you like an employee," Camille said. "But what is most surprising is that they treat me almost like a family member. There is a lot of trust, I get the keys to their house and can come in and out whenever I want, I can cook whatever I want. I get treated with a lot of respect."

The Rise of Private Cheffing

Until recently, private chefs were a reserve of the wealthy one percent who could afford not to make themselves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. But times are changing. With the rise of social media and the increasing demand for bespoke culinary experiences, private cheffing has become more accessible than ever.

"Five or six years ago, there were maybe only five to 10 private chefs in London," Mike said. "Now there's literally maybe 500 or more private chefs. It's very accessible now, and a lot more people know about it now than when I first started out."

Camille, who also runs private cooking classes, says she was most surprised by how her clients treat her like she is part of their 'family'

The New Normal

Kit Davis, a Cornwall-based chef who used to head the kitchen at The Wellington Hotel in Boscastle, turned to private cheffing about 18 months ago. Initially thinking it would be a temporary measure until he found another restaurant job, Kit is now booked solid and cooks for special occasions like weddings and birthdays.

"Some people I cooked for last summer rebooked me this year when they went to their holiday homes in Cornwall for the season," Kit said. "I cook for all sorts of reasons – sometimes it's because people have mobility issues and can't stand in the kitchen for long; other times, people just have loads of kids and need some help cooking for everyone."

The Benefits

While hiring a private chef might seem like an indulgent expense, it can actually be more cost-effective than dining out at fine restaurants. For instance, Kit charges around £60 per head on average for a three-course meal, plus travel costs, which is significantly less than the same meal at a restaurant in London.

Mick Binnington, another seasoned private chef with 23 years of experience, agrees that hiring a private chef can be more affordable and personalized. His prices vary between around £50 per person for large events like weddings to about £100 per person for more intimate dinners of 10 people.

The Joy of Cooking

One thing that all these private chefs agree on is the joy of cooking for their clients. Camille said, "When you work in restaurants, you're just focusing on slinging the dishes out fast as you can and front-of-house staff are so busy, they don't have time to relay compliments. Now, I get the feedback directly and everyone has been really nice."

Kit echoed this sentiment: "My love and passion for cooking has come back, and I get to be more creative now. It's amazing how much people appreciate good food when it's cooked with love and care."

A Glimpse into the World of the Rich and Famous

As we close our investigation into the secret lives of private chefs, one thing is clear: they are not just cooks; they are confidants, friends, and family members to the rich and famous. They have access to the most opulent spaces, cook for celebrities and royalty, and experience firsthand the excesses of the wealthy.

But what's most surprising is how nice these clients are – almost like a second family. As Camille said, "There is a lot of trust, I get the keys to their house and can come in and out whenever I want, I can cook whatever I want. I get treated with a lot of respect."

As we bid farewell to our private chef friends, we are left with one final thought: the next time you're planning a dinner party or special occasion, consider hiring a private chef. Not only will it be an unforgettable experience, but it might just bring you closer to the people and food that truly matter.
