In an emotional episode of Dancing With The Stars, Derek recounted the terrifying moment when he received news that Hayley was in critical condition. "I was on stage, and she's supposed to come out," Derek shared, his voice trembling with emotion. "The stage manager walked out and just said, 'Hey, she's not coming on stage.' She was on the side of the stage having full seizures and, essentially, dying."
"We rush her to the hospital, she's still in her costume, and the doctor came to me and he said that, 'She has a severe brain bleed, so we have to operate right now,'" Derek recalled. "He said that she might not make it and that even if she does make it, she won't be the same person."
But Hayley's determination and strength in the face of adversity inspired her husband and fans worldwide. As part of her recovery journey, Hayley learned to walk again and wore a helmet as her skull healed.
Now, as they prepare for parenthood, Derek and Hayley are over the moon about their new addition. "We definitely want to have a family eventually," Derek told The Scholarly Note last year. "We'll see what's in the cards, what's on the horizon. Little dancing children running around."
