Cuomo Struts into NYC Fashion Week Amid Political Drama and Tragedy
POLITICS MEETS PINK TERRACOTTA: Andrew Cuomo Struts His Stuff on the Catwalk, But Where's Mayor Adams?
In a shocking turn of events, former Governor Andrew Cuomo traded in his politician suit for a high-fashion strut down the catwalk at Style Across the Aisle, a bipartisan event that brought together more than 30 New York City government officials to show off their sartorial skills. The sold-out fashion show, which raised funds for the Witness to Mass Incarceration program, was a night to remember - and some of our favorite politicos certainly delivered.
But let's get right down to business: who did attend, and who didn't? Cuomo, looking sharp in his suit, seemed to be having the time of his life as he worked the runway with ease. But where were his mayoral opponents, Mayor Eric Adams and State Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani? Both had RSVP'd no, despite being invited to participate.
Meanwhile, David Patterson, the 55th Governor of New York who took over after Eliot Spitzer's scandalous exit, also made an appearance on the catwalk. His presence added a touch of old-school politics to the evening's festivities. But the real question is: why did Adams and Mamdani duck out?
Organizer Skye Ostreicher, aka "The Political Personality," was quick to point out that the event was meant to be a celebration of unity in these divisive times. "We're living in a time where there's a ton of political hatred and violence," she told The Scholarly Note after the show. "I like to think of this as one of the only bipartisan events, and it's so great to unite over something like fashion."
Ostreicher, who has been behind the scenes building relationships between politicians from both sides of the aisle, hopes that the event will become a movement - not just an annual thing. And with her infectious energy and charm, we wouldn't be surprised if she makes it happen.
But what really stole the show was the talent on display. Two designers from the Witness to Mass Incarceration program's art of tailoring program showcased their skills by dressing models in stunning outfits. Assemblyman Eddie Gibbs, New York's first formerly incarcerated state legislator, strutted his stuff alongside Councilwoman Julie Won, who wore a breathtaking traditional Korean look.
As for Curtis Sliwa, Cuomo's competitor in the mayoral election, he was spotted in the audience - sporting his signature red beret, no less. We couldn't help but wonder if he was itching to join the ranks of the politico-fashionistas on stage.
But not everyone was thrilled about the event. Adams' rep had some choice words for Cuomo's fashion prowess: "There is no one who more defines the word fashion in government - from his walk to his talk - than the Mayor." Ouch! The rep also took a jab at Cuomo, saying that while he may look good on the runway, Adams will be busy hosting town hall meetings across the five boroughs.
All's well and fair play in love and politics, we suppose. But one thing is for sure: Style Across the Aisle has set the bar high for future politico-fashion events. And with Ostreicher at the helm, we can't wait to see what she comes up with next.
